Daz Studio unusable on Cloud Server

With the spiralling costs of building a good rendering and games machine I have started investigating buying time on a cloud server on a subscriotion basis. For those that don't know what that is, its a fully configured server in the cloud with a high spec GPU and hardware that you rent time on over the internet.  However when running DAZ studio on that server, I find it is impossible to use as the mouse is far too sensitive. If I try to rotate around a scene it just spins about madly - even the timiest touch will rotate the scene uncontrollably. I tried installing Blender on the same cloud machine and you seem to be able to navigate around the viewport fine, but when in DAZ studio, its unusable.

I read around this a bit and on google it seems to sugget that when accessing machines remotely, the remote connection protocol usually sends absolute mouse coordinates while some games and applications expect relative mouse movements. As Daz and Blender are both accessed in exactly the same way, can someone from Daz confirm if this is the problem with Daz studio and if so, is there any way to fix it?

Hope someone can help ASAP before the trial period of this cloud server runs out :(

  • I don't know the answer to your question, but an alternative is to run DS on your local machine and just use a render farm for rendering with Iray Server (which can be accessed via the Advanced tab of Render Settings).

  • The problem with that Richard is that I wont get  iRay updating as I am working with the scene. The point of having an iRay display option is that you can edit thre scene and get instant feedback of how the final render will look as you are making changes. With a render farm you just send the scene file , they render it and send it back. Not a lot of use when you are trying to work out the best lighting and texture combination to use!

I have no experience with this at all, but Daz did make some mouse action improvements in the DS 4.11 Beta. Have you tried that version?

  • I hadn't heard about this before. I just found Paperspace and they have a new app which which makes it easier to drag and drop programs and files onto your cloud server. Looks intriguing! I'd like to see as well any early word on the new 3Delight NSI cloud server which may be even more affordable for rendering when it's more widely available. With wowie's AWE Shading kit for 3Delight, it may make things look great and even more quickly!

But to your problem, StealthWorks, have you tried the performance settings in DAZ Studio? They might affect your display with your service as they do on a regular PC, making it easier to move around in your display.

  • Hi Kevin

Yes, its paperspace I'm using and the problem definitely seems to be with the internet protocol they are using. I installed Splashtop and accessed the cloud computer using that and the problem went away!!

So, looks like the issue is a combination of the internet protocol used by Paperspace and the way Daz Studio interprets mouse movements over that protocol (I say Daz Studio is partially to blame as Blender seems to work fine over the Paperspace link).

Anyway, solution is to use Splashtop to acces the cloud server and everything seems fine then!

  • Cool! Is Splashtop another service or does it work with Paperspace?
