A tutorial or set of tricks for tats accross UV's, is there any chance thers a second UV set hidden some place
I'm trying to place a tatto on the leg but the placement area I want has that tat partly on the torso and across the UV
onto the leg, it seems the leg UV is a different scale to the torso and I'm not having much luck working out the correct rotation either

You could, if you are rendering in Iray, use a Decal node (Create>New Iray Decal - you probably want it on the Z axis) to project the pattern onto the skin - however as the deal is flat there would probably be noticeable stretching as the skin curves away. If you stretched the pattern at the edges in an image editor that might be usable.
Another option would be to remap the model, only the area you actually need matters and the rest can be left as a jumble in an odd corner of the template, then load that as a new UV set, apply a Geometry Shell to the figure, and use that shell to carry the tattoo (which us why mapping the areas not covered by the tattoo isn't needed). This method obviously requires more tools and steps, and you may not like the result of having the tattoo on a separate layer of mesh anyway.
