I was forced to download 4.10 ... and my nightmare has started. Please help. {RESOLVED}

Long story short ... tight deadline and suddenly my dynamic clothing control in 4.7 won't work and now the product library only offers the upgraded DCC for 4.10 ... hence, the hateful download. So how can I get this interface to look as close to what I'm used to in 4.7 for me to make my deadline?

Did you save a layout (Windows-->Layout--> Save Layout)? then you could sinply load that from the 4.7 version.

Otherwise, Edit --> Preferences --> interface and Windows-->Layout are what you need to manipulate. As I don't have the slightest idea what your "nightowls" is and what your desired layout looks like, I'm afraid that is as much help as I can give you...

I open 4.7 because I installed 4.10 on my external hard drive. But now 4.7 looks alien to me and I can't edit my preferences to find my content folder location. I have no content tab at all now. Crap like this is why I hate upgrading. It screws up everything else.

My content directory manager won't even open.

That wasn't upgrading you did, but installing a second version of Studio, which always messes up things, because it writes over the existing settings. Also, there's a good chance that most of your plugins for 4.7 won't work because they now think 4.7 is 4.10. I had to try this with my 4.11 Beta/4.10 Beta version recently due to some issues, and everything went to canoodles. Not really advisable.

If you are lucky, reinstalling 4,7 maybe will fix things, but it can make things worse, so... again, my expertise ends at this point, unfortunately.

Thanks for at least trying. I wrongly assumed installing 4.10 on a whole other drive would prevent the over-write ... Leave it to Daz to complicate what used to be the easiest software to work with. ... I REALLY HATE UPGRADES. I RARELY FIND THEM TO BE IMPROVEMENTS.

And here we go again ... I download the most recent DIM to get this error, again: DAZ Install Manager cannot be run with elevated permissions.

I had no clue what that meant before ... had no clue after reading the thread about it ... And still, have no clue how to fix it ... Oh ... and my dynamic clothing still isn't working in 4.10 with the latest DCC. So stayed up all night to get nowhere ... Worse than nowhere ... backward from where I was when I got up yesterday morning.

  • can you do a restore from your backup?

I understand you're pissed off, but if you had really upgraded, you wouldn't have these particular problems now.

Also, (assuming that this is a Windows install), they are always installing important stuff on C-Drive under C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D

If you unhide the Appdata folder, you can see the DAZ folders there. Reminds me, there's a dzinstall.ini file at that appdata top level, which contains the information where everything is installed. Maybe, if you check that, you can see where it points to. There ar also similar ini files within the Appdata's DAZ3D folders, but I'd proceed with extreme caution, and as a minimum do a backup of these folders before you change anything.

Als, that message you get about Elevated Permissions - have you tried to install using "Run as Admin"? If yes, then try running the installation normally, without the "Run as Admin".

can you do a restore from your backup?

I thought about that ahead of time, before I downloaded 4.10, I made a copy of 4.7 and uploaded it to my google drive. Then I downloaded 4.10 to an external hard drive hoping to keep the two programs separate. I was wrong in my thinking.

So I open my character in 4.10, after downloading the latest dynamic clothing control, and just in case, I also downloaded and reinstalled the garments I'm trying to use, and am having the same problem I was having with the dynamic garments which started me down this rabbit hole. The rigging for the garment loads, but the garment itself doesn't.

    What am I doing wrong?

How did I 'not really upgrade? Do I need to do it again, this time to my C: drive and not the external?

Yes ... Windoows 10 64 bit. And here is where I get leary. I hate playing with hidden files because I don't know enough about that stuff to trust myself playing with it.

I'm not sure about the elevated permissions error because as far as I can tell, I'm not being given an option to select or not select anything about admit. At what point should I be seeing that option?

  • I meant restore your application data roaming etc folders with your old settings

Not sure how to do that since I didn't know to back that part up, too, before installing 4.10. I might still have 4.7 installed on an old laptop, though. Would copying a file from the roaming folder on that laptop to this laptop work?

    C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D

move that folder and create a new one with that name the rightclick properties previous versions tab

and see if you have a backup

I presume you run regular backups surprise

alernatively run backup and restore on your PC to before you did this

Ok... Assuming that all goes right, will I still have the dynamic clothing control problem which instigated the upgrade to begin with?

well yeah but you hopefully will be back to before you started

keep your moved folder in case it's worse too

OK ... I've reinstalled 4.7, so it's back to where it was, however, I still need my dynamic clothing control to work ... I don't care in which program, 4.7 or 4.10. And still hesitantly tinkering with why DIM won't work.

Under C:\Users, all I see is two folders: Administrator and Public ...

    No C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D

Where else may I find it?

well no idea if not there unless you have system files hidden or something

I have reinstalled DCC ... opened 4.10, and still don't see it under my tabs. How do I tell it to find it? And how do I turn off 'Run as Administrator' for DIM to work?

Why is it so hard to get anything to work as it's supposed to?

@WillowRaven, you did not really upgrade, because the 4.7 was not replaced by the 4.10, but you created a parrallel installation.

    For unhiding that folder: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10

And another bit of googlefoo revealed this post from the forum, where someone seems to have the same issue:https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/257176/daz-install-manager-cannot-be-run-with-elevated-permissions

Under C:\Users, all I see is two folders: Administrator and Public ...

"user" would usually be your user account. However, if you just see those two folders, that means that you are running the PC as"Administrator", which might explain your DIM issues. You would most likely find the files in C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D

Looking at my 'installed plugins' window, I can see where DCC has been 'disabled'. But putting in any variation of my serial numer from my aount on daz doesn't do anything. All I keep getting is 'this plugin must be registered' error.

  • You are using the one that starts SDZDCCT?

  • WillowRavenWillowRaven Posts: 3,787

I got it working ... FINALLY!

i HAD TO COMPARE THE PLUGIN FILES TO THIS COMPUTER TO THE FILE ON THE OTHER COMPUTER, THEN DELETE TO WEIRD FILE ETENSION FILES. .... sorry ... all caps.

That's for the help, even if it just helped me to think through it. I am certainly no programmer and don't care to be. As long as it works, I'm happy.

Now all I have to do is figure out DIM ... At least I still have both full software versions so I can continue to work in 4.7 for paid gigs and I guess I'll learn 4.10 in my free time, though I have no use for iray, I have a feeling all of the ool dforce clothes I am seeing will sooner or later tempt me and I'll need time to learn that feature. So regardless of the 24 hours of aggravation, I'm glad I did install them as separate programs and not simply over-write 4.7, or I'd be out a lot of money and business.

Thanks, again, for putting up with me, guys.
