Light up the interior of a bulding

Hi Guys,

So I bought a great building to start making a sceen, but I am having some problems with light up the interior of the building. I just do not seem to be ble toget enough light in to it.

Any ideas about types of light that could be used to help brighten up the inside?

  • How are you trying to light it, and is the issue you are having the actual illumination level (look at the Tone Mapping section in the Editor tab of Render Settings if this is in Iray) or noise (try adding more lights to reach the places that are currently being lit only by bounce light - Ghost Lights are a help here).

  • Right now I'm experimenting with this and currently doing a portrait render(I know, not an ideal render for an example) using a similar scene. When I get home, if I have time I'll upload the screenshot of the character and try to do a quick one of the room. What I did was used emissive shaders on the light textures and jacked the lumens up to 3.5 million Lumens and threw in a spotlight towards the front to the character's left. I'll probably end up having to lower the lumens a bit because it causes too much of a shine on the character's nose.

    Ghost Lights?

  • The Environment was set to Scene Only, and the emissives were set at 6k temp with the Lumens at 3,500,000 in the rendered scene & portrait, with the exception that I had the spotlight as previously mentioned in the portrait render(I don't think it made much of a difference since I only had it set at 70,000 Lumens. 1st ss: unrendered scene, 2nd ss: rendered scene(did it to 63% completion), 3rd ss: rendered viewport portrait(100% completion).

So what are the ghost lights to which is being referred to?

  • A ghost light is an emissive surface (usually just a one-division plane) with a very low but non-zero Cutout Opacity, so that it provides light but isn't visible. You can make your own or you can use https://www.daz3d.com/iray-ghost-light-kit which is more convenient. The idea being to place them to supplement indirect light, which slows rendering down.

Your lumen values sound very high, I would think it better to adjust the Tone Mapping settings to get the lught level you want.

  • Daz models are often "shiny". Change the values of the materials so they are less "glossy". Your lighting looks fine.
