DAZ taking too long to converge when doing up close face shot of Genesis 8 female.

If I do a render of Genesis 8 female from the chest up. It takes 4 minuets to get 5% convergence.
If I do an up close face shot render of Genesis 8 female. It takes 17 minutes to reach 1.27% convergence.
I have a GTX 980 with 4gb of memory. The most memory used is 2.5gb.
Is it normal for an up close face render to take extremely longer?
Anyone willing to do a test? Compare a chest up render to an up close face render and compare how long it takes to report the first convergence number.

A lot depends on your settings. With my 1080ti a neck up portrait of any of the hd gen 8 females with the settings correct for a portrait and the right lighting etc. takes longer than a full body shot with the same settings.
The materials used in the default Genesis 8 figures are more complex, and so slower to render, than those for Genesis 3. You could try applying the Genesis 3 base materials to Genesis 8 while holding the ctrl key (cmd key for a Mac) down, then in the dialogue box choose Ignore for maps and see if the results are acceptable when rendered.
If the figure has hair then yes it will take longer for a close up. The trans maps of the hair slow down the render (Iray isn't as bad as 3Delight about this) and since the hair will make up a large percentage of the render a close up is usually slower than a far shot.
To add to this, when you zoom in on the character, more of the image has surface effects like subsurface scattering, trasmission, etc. That means that the light path is more complicated for more of the rendered image. This can definitely slow things down. I've also found that the calculation for convergence isn't as accurate. Once you get above say 80% you may not be able to detect any changes in the image because the change in the pixel values is so small it doesn't really make a difference to your eyes. So you may end up needing to fiddle with the progressive render settings to get it to finish more efficiently.
