What's the difference between a yellow check mark, and a grey one?

When I'm--for instance--saving a pose, what is the difference between between a yellow check mark in a field and a grey one in the figure tree? See attached image for clarification.

Partial selection (grey) vs total.
To expand on Richard's answer with examples,
The gray checkbox on "Genesis 8 Female\General" means that some but not all of the sub-items are selected. While the yellow checkbox on "Genesis 8 Female\Pose Controls" means that all of the sub-items in that part of the tree are selected.
Ahhhh, thank you both, I understand now.
