Hi
I came across these really good anime hair sets on deviantart

& I'd very much like to learn how this kind of hair is modelled so I was just wondering if anyone here recognises what methods the artist has employed and might possibly be able to point me in the right direction so I can start learning how to create my own anime hair.

Those are sculpted pieces of solid geometry with a plain shader rather than transmapped planes.

I did that kind of hair some time ago by sculpting with blender. You can also use sculptris or any other sculpt tool

    Thanks
I'd best brush up on my sculpting skills then.
