Why do I see this when I add a spotlight?

I added the premade set of light in a scene. When I tried to look through the various spotlights to see where they were situated, I saw something like this. So, I deleted this spotlight and added a new one right in front of my figure. Didn't change much, so I increased the luminosity more, still nothing, so I looked again through my new spotlight...and it looked again like the one I had deleted.

What's happening????

It happens as you adjust the spread angle of the spot, acting a little like what happens with a camera when you adjust the focal lenght/zoom
