    @marble If you mean alembic it imports the viewport resolution so yes you can get a HD animation. If you mean diffeo you can get a good approximation of the HD figure with the multires + shrinkwrap modifiers as explained in the diffeo discussion.

    I thought I would add that I have not managed to get the Alembic exporter to work with Unreal. So if that is your target workflow you might want to think twice. Here is a more extensive post: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/924479/view.html. The bottom line is that the FBX from DAZ to Unreal works fine but the Alembic import has an issue with the texture which you can see most obviously in the eyebrows. I've raised this with both DAZ and Unreal but I don't know where the fault lies... It could be the exporter, it could be the Unreal import, it could be I have not hit upon the correct settings that will make it work. I did find a post that showed the same problem with Octane and it looks like it was fixed so I tend to think that Unreal might be the ones to fix this.alt text

    I got it into my head that to use this in Unity a while ago.  I get similar texture texture problems.

    @dortybassa Is this with the official Alembic exporter, or with the one we are discussing here?

    If it's ours you're referring to, beware that I borked up the latest release pretty badly, but could you try version 1.10.1.0? It could be as simple as vertex ordering.

    We really need to change the name to avoid confusion.

  • To avoid confusion, I'm going to refer to it as Sagan.

  • I've started a discussion about Sagan in the Blender section.

  • 1.  Export the alembic file with "preserve subdivision surfaces" checked.

    @Auroratrek

    I think you are refering to the official Alembic exporter, not the one we're collaborating on here, and here. I admit, we did kind of hijack the topic.

    @Auroratrek

    You could, of course, try it out... there are lots of improvements to benefit from, and it's being actively developed.

  • hi this pluggin can export alembic Ogawa to blender? as many of you know blender does not support the HDF5 format and now in stuck and i want to tried this pluggin but dont know how to install it lol anyone can help me?

    another thing (idk if will be of useful) is that i was experimenting with daz and blender and i exported a character as obj adding all the textures manually

    and it looks very natural, the problem is that obj does not have weight paint and vertex groups so i cant add mi own rig to the character

    so i imported a fbx file and copied the same materials but now it looks so bad on the mesh and as you can see in the preview material it looks the same!! i even tried with the diffeomorphic addon and it looks the same as the fbx

    i read that the alembic format is very similar to the obj but it can have other data like the fbx, like the best of both worlds so please help mee! so i can continue doing my research. thanks

  • Man! Thanks SO FREAKING MUCH!
    I just bought the "official" exported for 80 something bucks and I I couldn't get the textures to look right unless I checked a "preserve subdivision surfaces". But I have a 300 frame animation which UN-subdivided is already 9GB. By sheer accident I stumbled upon this thread and now I have an alembic with correct UVs working perfectly in Houdini 18.5.
    Thanks again!!
    Peace

  • I'm trying to install Sagan and am having difficulties. I've already put the .dll file in the plugins folder and it says it's working when I click ''about installed plugins''. I restarted, but I can't export to a .abc file. I also have the folder of all the other information from the sagan-source-3.0.0.tar.gz file and have opened it, but I'm not sure where to put that. Could anyone help?

    Hi @tabithaswansondesign

    This space is about the official Alembic exporter. We talk about Sagan, specifically, here.
