New PC build question

I've recently started buying parts for a new PC, my current one is 7yrs old (Phenom II) with a gtx 1060 6Gb.

Being on a tight budget I was thinking that adding a second 1060 while they're cheap would be a better option than something just outside of my budget as much as i'd like a 2080

Would there be benefit in having two 1060s though?

yep there would be, providing you have two PCIE 3.0 x 16 slots to get full use out of them. 12 GB of vram will come in handy. I just got myself a GTX 1080 Ti with 11GB and loads of Cuda cores and boy what a diffenrece it makes. Make sure you get planty of main RAM too. I have 16gb and to be honest I am struggling with some scenes. I intend to get another 16GBs in the new year.

  • How do you make the VRAM of the two cards add up?

if you select both cards in the Render settings pane under the Advanced tab it should do it automatically. I believe it works best when the cards are the same.

  • No! You cannot make 10xx cards combine VRAM. The only benefit in having two 1060's in the same system would be double the rendering speed when the entire scene was smaller than 6Gb.

humm that seems to fly against what a lot of folks here say. Time to do some checking.

Ok my bad I misunderstood what SLI was for. Seems like Kenshaw is correct

    No.

Well, if one breaks you still have another.

The 2080 has more RAM, and is likely to be faster than two 1060s, although I'd look for benchmarks to verify that.

There is also the possibility that the 2080 will provide still more performance when the much-promised but so far vapour-wear that Nvidia provided with Tensor cores and the like.

  • BTW one solution to the OP's problem would be to buy the 2080 and then sell the 1060 on eBay or Craigslist. That would offset at least $100 or $150 of the cost of the new card.

the 2080 is atm 3-4 times the price, not sure if it's worth it, the AUS$ isn't travelling that well atm

  • That's roughly the same as the US. If you can't afford that look into the 2070.
