Looking for some patches ...

I need patches for uniforms, like insignia or ranks or shields worn on the upper arms/shoulder area, I need them for both v4 and m4 if possible, and preferably usable on any shirt I may dress them in. Anyone know of anything like that?

No idea what any of that is or how to do it, lol.
I know how to change the texture of an existing item and how to make something transparent. What I don't know how to do is make a shield-shaped shoulder patch that will fit on the upper arm over draped fabric of my choosing and not look like a flat plane.
Make geoshell of jacket (or whatever). The geo shell will have same UV map as the base item.
Find or make a suitable patch.
Place and scale the patch according to the UV map and make a corresponding transparency map.
Load maps into geoshell and check. This migth take some trial and error to get in rigth location. The geoshell migth have a little offset to indicate that it is sewn on top of the item.
This is a very rude attempt:
I used a shader for the tops, so the original texture is no longer there; unless I duplicate the tops and apply the patches to the original texture, then render both and mask one to show the patch on the original texture, but it's going to be a pain to do for both sleeves for the entire crew on the bridge (spaceship crew). If I use LIE, how would I make sure where the patch will be when using Day Job Shader for the color I want?
A shader will not change the UV map. And that goes whether you use a geo shell or LIE
So in both cases the patch shall just be placed according to the original texture.
Perhaps you find here something useful. Most are for Poser but you could try them

If you have Filter Forge (at least version 3), this filter might be good to make a normal map to give the patches a stitched embroidered look...
https://filterforge.com/filters/10923.html
I know it took a little fiddling with to get the effect to look right, but I used it a couple of years ago to make some uniform insignias look like they were actually sewn, not decals... the instructions in the filter description are helpful.
There is actually a much better filter, which I discovered afterwards, but it's not tagged well, so when you search for it it doesn't show up as you'd expect... I think it was designed for something else, but it does an embroidery effect too... I searched a bit, but I can't find it and that filter is stuck on a old computer that needs repair, so sorry I can't find it or remember its name.
Good luck.
@McGyver Thank you for providing another solution for creating patches! I have Filter Forge and didn't even think about using it for such a purpose.
I searched through a lot of the available filters and found 8 more that do a similar stitched/embroidered patch effect and added them after the one you found in the list below. Let us know if one of those is the one you had used before on your old computer. If it's not in the list and you happen to get your old computer repaired, let us know if you ever find the other filter name... thanks!

Sorry to respond late, but due to the wonders of both 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Timeout I wasn't able to respond until now... whenever that is... because I'm just going to keep occasionally coming back here and trying to send this (copied my reply to a text editor because I'm that sick of the forum software having a stroke and losing my posts)...
Any freakin' way...
If this message ever finds its way to you, I did look some more and didn't find anything that could be that particular filter I mentioned... I did actually find a different one I was looking for, but not that one... unfortunately that computer the filter is on is unlikely to be repaired because it's a Mac and I haven't won the lottery lately... that and it was fairly ancient too... (regular ancient, not "Apple ancient" where the computer is three months old and they are like "why are you still using such an old computer?")
Of the filters you listed, I honestly think that "Embroidery" is the best of them because if used properly it makes a good try at simulating a patch and it includes the ability to produce a bump or normal map as well.
I also found this... (I hope this will not be deleted because this is a link to a tutorial and is relevant to a preexisting conversation, even though it is not directly being requested)... (also, just delete the link if there an issue, not the whole post, please... I tried like a million times to post this)
This is a tutorial on how to make an embroidered effect using Photoshop... (and technically other image editors too, if you know what the equivalent of the Photoshop functions are)... https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-realistic-embroidery-text-in-adobe-photoshop--cms-27120
If the link gets removed just Google "How to Create a Realistic Embroidery Text Effect in Adobe Photoshop tutorial".
To create the bump or normal maps, one could use Materialize... https://boundingboxsoftware.com/materialize/
Good luck.
@McGyver I'm glad that you were able to get your reply posted. I think we've all been experiencing the forum gateway errors recently, and I'm also in the habit of now copying my message to my clipboard before clicking the post button in case something goes wrong.
As for your dead Mac... another option to consider would be to remove the internal hard drive and purchase a cheap external USB case on a site like Amazon. I've done this for both dead Mac and PCs and been able to retrieve data. Then you could copy your old library of Filter Forge filters off the old disk (they're in /Library/Application Support/Filter Forge/System/) and onto a different computer.
Thanks for the Photoshop embroidery effect link, as that looks like another promising way to make custom patches. Materialize also looks very useful and I just downloaded it.
Cheers!
