How do I change the background color in the viewport

I'm talking about the base, just opened Studio background, whre you see the grid and load characters.  On one of my machines it is grey, which is what I want.  But on another it's solid black, which makes it hard to work on darker objects.  I've checked in preferences, but didn't find anything that affects it.  Any idea what I'm missing?

Set a backdrop in the Environment Tab Pane (not render settings) -> Type: Backdrop. Pick a colour, any colour.

Or, for something more permanent, Menu -> Window -> Style -> Customize Style. From there you can change the colour of any UI component.

The former affects only the area inside the Aspect frame, and renders. The latter affects the whole viewport, and does not affect renders.

Hmm.  I tried the second one, the background it changed was the menu backgrounds, not the viewport.  But when I canceled the preview, the viewport background reverted back to the original gray I was looking for, so, I guess it worked?  Odd.  Oh well, I can see what I'm doing again, so yay!  Thanks guys!
