How Do I Make Stripes on A Figure?

I'm planning to make aliens with morphs, and I want to add stripes, spots, and other markings to them. How do I do that? Is there a way to add things like that without buying a kit?

  • I saw that post, but I'm not clear on how you would add stripes as opposed to a whole arm being a different color, for example. Do I have to have kits for that kind of detail?

    Gimp or Photoshop

To add stripes, etc. you would want to use Method 2 that Hylas has in the referenced post and edit the textures in a photo editor like Photoshop. That way, you can add stripes to the underlying textures.

There are several ways to do this in Photoshop. I would recommend creating a layer, adding the stripes or other markings, then saving as a native Photoshop file. Then save as a .png or .jpg, which would flatten the image to a single layer. You would then use that one on your figure, but you would have the master photoshop file in the event you want to make changes or do other things.

This can also be done in other photo editors such as GIMP or Paint Shop Pro if you don't use Photoshop.

If you use the method described there, you need to add the textures manually with a graphics editor, such as Photoshop, Gimp, or whatever.

that said some enterprising Published Artist could create and sell a LIE or Geoshell based system to harvest money from the click and render crowd yes

then they need to put effort in devil

thats why many odd things sell like extras transmapped  on planes anyone could do because many prefer to pay for a one click solution

Here's what I do for tatoos, dirt, etc.  Might work for stripes.

If you have an image editor, open the texture file you want to add stripes to.  Example: "Edward8Torso.jpg" or whatever.  (Find the path under "Base Color" in Surfaces Tab.)

In an image editor like PS or GIMP, "Save As..." to prevent accidentally messing up the base texture file.

Create a layer and paint the stripes, dirt, makeup, whatever you want.  Delete the background layer so your file only has the stripes and the rest of the area is transparent.

    Save the file as .png

Under Surfaces tab, find the file that's in use.  Base Color ---> "Edward8_Torso" etc.  Click on the colored 'skin' preview to the left of the color settings.

Choose "Layered Image Editor..." from the menu.

The Layered Image Editor (LIE) window will appear.

Find the "Plus" sign under Layers.  Click on it and select "Add Layer" or "Add Mask" as desired.

Note your preview on left hand side is now black.  Look for "Resource" and a clickable box that says "None"

Click on "None" and choose "Browse."

Navigate to where you saved your .png file.  Choose the file and click "Open."

The Preview should now show the Base Color file along with the New Layer.  Adjust the opacity and position if desired.

    Click "Accept."

Preview in IRay or assume you can run test render in 3DL.

If don't like it, might take some trial and error.  Open LIE again and where "New Layer" is highlighted in yellow, click the "Negative" sign.  The .png file is removed and your character is back to default.

    Hope that helps!

Edit:  While I was typing, looks like others were also replying.  Sorry if repeat.  Method two then...  ;)

  • Thanks! This has all been very helpful. Unfortunately, I don't have Photoshop (nor can I afford it right now), so it looks like I'm going to have to buy a kit/s. Any suggestions?

  • You don't have to use Photoshop - any image editor that handles layers should do

  • Thanks! Are there any free ones that are good?

Gimp is free. Haven't worked with it myself.

  • Thanks very much.

Here's a stripe version, maybe you could start with this.

  • Thanks. I was actually thinking more along the lines of tiger or zebra stripes . . .

Paint.net is free, it's what I use. Lots of plugins for it on their website, it is extremely customizable and easy to use.

  • Thanks!

  • You should try Krita, it is a powerfull, free open source painting software.
