Poser Question

Hey guys. Seems like there's a pretty large contingent of Poser users who do not use Daz Studio, and I've gotten a number of requests for Poser versions of both the NFXstudios Farmhouse that was released today, as well as the NFXstudios Summer Camp that's coming soon™.

Up until a few months ago, I worked in 3ds Max with Mental Ray/VRay almost exclusively. Since then I got into exporting things into Daz Studio and picked up the workflow on that pretty quickly. But I don't own and have never used Poser, so I never gave much thought to getting these things to work in that program as well.

Obviously, though, I'd like to make my sets available to as many people who want them as possible. Can someone point me to a good place to start in regards to doing Poser conversions? Like I said, I don't own the program. Is it possible to use the original OBJs and do the conversion through Daz Studio?

Thanks a bunch!

JZyla

Honestly you really need to purchase Poser to convert things properly to it just like if you are a Poser user and want to make stuff well for DAZ Studio. Materials between them can be pretty different and you need to make adjustments to make the product look the best it can.

As of a week ago (not sure if it is still going on or not) but Poser 9 was on sale on Smith Micros website for pretty inexpensive. The best thing you could do if you want to really make things for Poser is pick up a copy and read tutorials (there are tons) on how to develop for it etc. If for some reason you can't (low on fund/time etc) you may want to look around and see if maybe someone would want to work with you or something who owns Poser and do the conversions for you but if you go that way be sure it is someone familiar/experienced with creating and packaging things for Poser :)

Another alternative is to partner up with somebody who's willing to do the Poser side of things.

Yeah I had mentioned that as an option as well.

On Poser I believe the Pro versions may be on sale as well though I could be wrong. I have PP2014 so I didn't look very closely as I all ready owned Poser Pro 9 and the newest one. (Actually I think I own all of them back to Poser 5...eeek LOL)

Actually I just looked and it seems like the sale may be over though you may be able to call Smith Micro and double check :)

Sounds about right. I had imagined the materials would be quite different. Pretty much all the modelers work with geometry the same way and in the same format, but every renderer is different in the way they handle materials.

I'll look into picking Poser up and see what I can do with it.

    Thanks for the input!

Damnit, don't mind me. Coffee worked on my body but did squat for my eyeballs and brain apparently. :red:

    Thanks for doing that.
obj files work in older versions of Daz, Poser and Carrara.

In Carrara, our users usually swap out the materials with our own Carrara specific materials. The more zones you have, the better.
For example, a good model of, say a door, has zones for the door, the handle, the hinges, the window in the door, the trim, etc.

We also have powerful tools to help us adjust materials when we don't have Carrrara, specific ones.

I can't promise it will happen quickly -- first I have to raise the capital to buy the program, then I have to learn the interface and workflow -- but it something I plan to do.

I already own Carrara, so that is something I can look into as well.

    Thanks!

Poser 9 is currently on sale @ Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Micro-Software-Inc-PSR9HDVD/dp/B005LXIJ7M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381098659&sr=8-2&keywords=poser

Amazon sales do tend work wonky though. From what I've read, apparently they set the prices based on what they believe "you're" willing to pay, so I don't think everybody sees the same sale prices. For me, PC/Mac boxed is $74.95, Mac download is $102.12, and PC download is $102.91

When I initially bought PP2012 on sale from them, I went in again the same day/next day and refreshed a few times, and sure enough, the "sale" price was higher than what I originally paid for it. o_O

Most of the work could still be done in Daz Studio if that's the program you're most comfortable with as Ds can export the objects to Poser format pretty easily,
the only bit that differs to any great degree is the materials setup

Just on a side-note, Poser, just like all the content here at the DAZ shop, tends to go on sale rather frequently. If you can spare the time, I'm sure you'll be able to get a good deal on Poser somewhere before the end of the year. Maybe during the Halloween sale. Or the Thanksgiving sale. Or Black Friday. Or Cyber Monday. Or Christmas. Or the End-Of-The-Year sale. :D

    NFX,

Have a look at this little guide I put together

    Dealing With Zipped Poser Content
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/5436/

If your making characters you can still do the entire CR2 related work in DAZ Studio though mat files and props (pp2 files) need to be done in poser.

Your excisting OBJ files should be perfect as is however if you imported them in to DS as 3DSM scale then you will need to adjust the scale for use in poser. In short, if you setup a poser figure in DS, you need to import the OBJ at poser scale cause DS will load the OBJ at poser scale when loading from the CR2.
