Cloth vs Metal in Renders
Still learning this program and now I am trying to adjust the surface properties so that I have some pieces as painted metal and some other pieces being cloth. Unfortunately it seems like all I can do is make everything look like plastic. What should I adjust so that the armor is the painted metal and the jumpsuit is a cloth (flat gray in color)?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

First, make sure that you are using the proper surface material (Iray instead of 3Delight). Then, you will need things like bump and other maps to give structure. You can either create them from scratch, or use shader sets like this one: https://www.daz3d.com/da-iray-fabric-shaders-leather-and-cloth

thanks, is there any good tutorials on creating the bump and maps?
Check out the first few pages of destininy garden's thread, she has a couple of resources and suggestions.
