Custom figure (from Hexagon) how do bones get welded?

Greetings. Having trouble googling this.
I made a custom humanoid figure in Hexagon. I created bones by cutting/pasting polys to create separate objects. Peeking at the .obj file confirms that these are "g"roups. And the DS Figure Setup tab accepts these groups as bones, and I can create the figure. But when adding weight maps and bending the limbs, I see that the groups aren't welded together, so that posing the limbs opens holes in the figure. Where did I go wrong?
I have tried checking most of the export options (for .obj) in Hexagon... "Merge equal points" and "remove duplicate points" seem like obvious contenders although I have no idea if these are really relevant to my problem...
Thanks for your thoughts.

To sort of answer my own question, I was able to get groups to weld by defining them using either Pegasus or DS itself. Maybe Hexagon can't do it. I was thinking that was impossible since it would mean there is no workflow using only Hex and DS to create a new custom figure. But since DS can group then that situation is avoided.
