Earlier figures not loading the textures [SOLVED]

VargrVargr Posts: 22

First off, I am not a seasoned user and has only recently "broken the code" when it comes to using Daz3D Studio (but is still very much a beginner).

I have tried to look around for an answer to my problem but hasn't found anything that helped me.

My problem

I have been working lately with primary G8F and G8M and it has worked well. I then decided I wanted to make a picture with all my non-human figures (centaur, orc, etc.) so I could use that picture to quickly see what I have. Nothing fancy, just the figures lined up, with random poses.

I then doscovered that quite a few of my figures didn't load with the textures (or MATs?) (they appear as grey figures). The earlier the figure the more likely they seem to have problems (ie. some G2 and G figures consistently appear in grey whereas G3 and G8 seem to work just fine).

I noticed a few other things along the way. One of the more odd is when I load Robbus Madgloom (a G3M figure) everything runs very slow in Daz, even simple scenes (things such as selecting buttons and figures or moving your perspective view). The moment I delete him from the scene Daz responds normally again. I do not know if this is related to my main problem or indicative of other problems.

My attempts at solving it

Step 1

First I removed all my content from the harddrive and removed the data in C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager.
Then I loaded DIM and it quickly noticed all my content was no longer on the harddrive and offered it for download and installation.
So I downloaded all contents and installed it (making sure the paths in DIM and Daz were identical - but there might be something I have to be aware of that I am not).
This didn't solve the problem.

Step 2

I then reset the database and asked Daz to reload all metadata again.
This seems to maybe have solved the problem for some figures, but for all.

Step 3

I have tried to uninstall and re-install the packages mentioned in this help: https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/207531383-Figures-load-as-grey-blocks-and-I-get-missing-files-error-

Not done

I haven't done a complete un-install and re-install of Daz - I would like to avoid that and to actually understand why I have the problem in the first place.

Some figures that cause problems:

  • Genesis
    • Genesis base figure (but not David 5)
  • G2F
    • IG Iray Monique 6 & FWF Janna Little Devil - here I get an error due to missing files (the files does not exist on the harddrive where Daz apparently looks for them - they are not on the harddrive at all).
Genesis 2 Female base figure loads fine as does Lanying (another G2F figure).
  • G2M
    • Oskarsson King of the Damned
    • IG Iray Darius 6 (error to missing files)
  • G3M
    • Genesis 3 Male base figure (duplicate formulars found) - loads with the textures though
  • G8
    • G8 Female and Male figures seems to behave.

System

  • Win10 64 bits
  • CPU I7
  • GPU GeForce GTX 960, 4 GiB RAM
  • Daz Studio 4.10 (version 4.10.0.123 Pro Edition (64-bit)

Sorry for the long mail. I am hoping the detail will help finding a solution.

Thank you in advance.

I see you have missing files errors on "IG Iray Monique 6" and "IG Iray Darius 6" in your list. Do you have Monique 6 and Darius 6 installed? If you don't then Iray settings for them won't work since you don't have the actual textures.

As for other figures loading grey, my guess would be that you use Iray but those are figures loading with materials using a specific 3DL shader (like AoA SSS shader) which won't translate into Iray automatically.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have "IG Iray Monique 6" and "IG Iray Darius 6" installed (through DIM). Or at least I went through all the motions of getting them installed.

Regarding the other figures you might be right about specific 3DL shader - I don't know much about that subject.
When I load Genesis Base Figure (in lack of a better name) it appears grey in the view port (set to Texture shader). It doesn't matter what render I choose.
As for rendering: There is no difference whether I render the scene in Iray, 3Delight, Reality Render or the OpenGL renders.

But I would imagine that the Genesis Base Figure is a default standard figure, that should work out-of-box and probably one of the simplest figures, so I am wondering what is going on.

    Later addition

Re-reading your answer I now understand what you meant.
No, I don't have the "base" Monique 6 and Darius 6. That makes sense - The "IG Iray" version rely on the base versions to be installed. I didn't think about that at all (there is a lot to learn re. Daz...).

It still leaves the problem of figures loading all in grey (rendering to white).

Just to take an example: Looking at my Oskarsson Queen of the Damned I can see it is compatible to G2F and has no requirements (according to the store page). And my Genesis Base Figure is still grey.

Well, so far some of the problems are solved (caused by me not understanding the dependencies). Thanks for that :-)

I don't think base Genesis 1 loads with a texture for the reason that it doesnt even have an established gender. In this case you select the object that needs a texture, and then find (from Smart Content or Content Library) some material preset to double-click to apply to them.

...Duplicate formulas is probably due to a bug in a product. I had that issue once and used the log to track down what product it was, and I just uninstalled it...

    Thank you Tzorg & Leana

I think you have solved the problems I had - or at least made me realise that it was probably less of a problem and more of a misunderstading from my side.

    1. The IG Iray-figures rely on their non-IG Iray-versions to work properly. I don't have non-IG Iray versions for all my IG Iray-figures.
    2. Genesis Base Figure doesn't work as stand alone (or so I think - now). Instead I should use Genesis Basic Male or Genesis Basic Female (or one of the characters based on the Genesis Base Figure.
    3. Oskarsons King and Queen of the Damned simply seems to be broken - maybe. At least that is what I will go with for now.

All that remains for me now is to figure out why G3F Cthulhiana HD and G3M Robbus Madgloom causes Daz to slow down whenever they are in the scene.

Again, thank you for helping me by pointing out things that should have been obvious to me. :-)

Regarding King of the Damned, if the icon you're clicking on says "Actor" and not "Shape" then I guess I would expect it to load with its textures... I think that clicking an "Actor" should be the one-click way to completely load the character. But if it doesn't work, it should still be possible to find the materials in Smart Content or Content Library and apply them.

The icon for "King of the Damned" clearly states "Actor" in white-on-blue.

If I load the figure, select it and double-click one of the four materials nothing happens.

If I have the figure selected and take a look in Smart Content - I am really not sure what I am looking at in there. Apparently everything and nothing.
I have simply no idea how that smart content thing works - if it does.

Well, I can live without that pair of figures.

Thank you for your time, both of you - much appreciated :-)

It does work, it's simply not supposed to load with textures as there's no "generic androgynous base" texture included. If you want a character with textures you'll need to load the male, female or child characters.

    Thank you for reply.

Yes, we are in agreement re. Genesis now that I understand the design philosophy behind :-)

My previous post could probably have been worded better :-/
