Installing DAZ Studio on totally empty hard-disk.

Well okay, so I have a new dektop computer, which I bought for the purpose of handling heavier stuff like 3D renders and certain games. So the thing is, this computer has two separate hard-drives, named C: and F: respectively. C: is the smaller one, only a little over 100 GB, while F: is 1000 GB. Of course I want to install DAZ Studio on F, but the automatic installation goes to C, because that's where all the folders and stuff is at. F is empty. So long story short, how do I get DS to install on the F disc? Do I just copy the folder directory from C?

I've done a write-up on setting up DIM and Studio like this; if you need further clarification I'll post screen shots.

When you start DIM for the first time be sure to check the Work Offline box.

Edited to add:  Second thing to do with DIM is to expand to full screen size.

@namffuak Thanks! It looks like I need some extra information here. I'm not sure screenshots would necessarily be of help to me, though. I hate to pull the "learning disability"-card, but I suffer from a peculiar form of ADHD, and so I take instructions 99% literally. If the screenshots don't look (almost) exactly like what I see on my own computer, my brain starts confusing me. indecision It sucks. What I actually need, is some more specific descriptions.

Click on the gear icon, top right, for the settings menu.

Where? In DIM? In the "Downloads" folder on my computer? On the downloads page for DS on here? crying

My head interpreted it as most likely meaning DIM, but in that case: DIM wants to install at C:/etc/ect/MyDaz3dLibrary. Can I change this to some directory of my own naming on F, and stuff will be fine? Will Studio be able to pull the items from there, so I can access them from inside the regular "Daz Formats" and "Poser Formats" folders/directories/I-don't-know-the-terminology?

I'm going to have to take this step by step, so right now I need to know where to put the DIM. Then I'll take the rest from there, as I get to it.

Okay, I admit defeat. Someone please help me, I'm really struggling with this. I need the directories set up exactly how they would be by default, only on the F-drive instead of the C-drive, which is simply too small to hold DAZ Studio. If I call the folders anything else than what they're called on my laptop, I won't be able to understand what is what, and I won't be able to use this computer to run Studio.

  • Click the gear icon at top-right of the DIM window, then go to the Installation tab. Click the + button to add a new location, name it, and click the ... button to select the folder you want to use (you can call it whatever you like, there's nothing special about the default names) then click Accept. Use the Current button at the bottom of the dialogue to select your new location, then click Accept.

In DS you can add the new location by downloading the this script http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config_import/start (use the link above the code) and dragging it into the Viewport with DS running.

I'm sorry, I'm just having a really difficult time following the intructions. So far I've managed to actually install Studio on F, but I can't figure out how to follow your instructions so that downloaded content goes there.

(you can call it whatever you like, there's nothing special about the default names)

I know, but I need to have them named exactly the same as they would be by default, (only with F instead of C in the path name), because else I won't be able to identify what corresponds with what. My head doesn't make the connection, because this is still so new, and I'm having a very bad brain-day, apparently.

Use the Current button at the bottom of the dialogue to select your new location, then click Accept.

I tried that, but nothing shows up in that location.

I did that. However, I failed to create the My Library folder under Daz Studio Formats, because I didn't know where to direct to.

  • If you add the directory in DIM, and call it "F drive" say, then when you click the Current button you will see F Drive". If you then use that script you will see the folder name under Daz Studio Formats and Poser Formats (as a second instance of the standard name, since that's what you used).

I think th OP needs to close DIM and Studio and take some time to clear their head.  When ready open Note Pad because you are going to create a 'cheat sheet' for the way you want to install the software and content.

Thank you for the advice. Writing everything down is probably the way I need to go! Also thank you Richard and namffauk, for seriously trying to help me. I think I may be having a flare-up of my Brain-Fog Disorder. (BFD, self diagnosis is valid, just ask Tumblr!) crying It'll probably be better by next week, and I'll try again then.
