I've been exploring the freebie section of the forum. I've downloaded a few things but have no idea how to install them. Is there a tutorial somewhere that might assist? Thanks.
You have to put the files in the correct folders for the products to work.
in the case of "Sweet Spring Dress":
The folder
00455_G8F Sweet Spring DressUD/data/Pusey Designs/G8 Sweet Spring Dress
Belongs in the folder
My Library/data/Pusey Designs/
The folder
00455_G8F Sweet Spring DressUD/People/Genesis 8 Female/Clothing/Pusey Designs/G8F Sweet Spring Dress
Belongs in the folder
My Library/People/Genesis 8 Female/Clothing/Pusey Designs/
The 3 files in
00455_G8F Sweet Spring DressUD/Runtime/support
Belong in the folder
My Library/Runtime/Support
The folder
00455_G8F Sweet Spring DressUD/Runtime/textures/Pusey Designs/G8F Sweet Spring Dress
Belong in the folder
My Library/Runtime/textures/Pusey Designs/
You're a mac user, right?
You can also drag the folders data, people, and runtime into your My Library folder while holding down the Alt key, then choose "merge".
This should merge the new folders with the existing ones instead of replacing them.
Personally, I don't quite trust the "merge" function, so I don't use it... but it exists.
(If you're gonna "merge", please at least make a back up first... I don't want to be responsible for some catastrophy!)
Are you using mac or Windows? Macs are a bit trickier to use in this (although maybe less than they were, I'm hazy on the current state).
I'm one of those silly little Mac people Richard. :=) Thanks to all above I have successfully installed a few things. I'm about to dive in to a big pile of freebies I downloaded this morning. If most of that works I'll be in the freebie game, at least at the most basic level. Yea!
I now have a small collection of freebies in my Content Manager. It seems I've already lost track of what is what, given that the folders for each product are the name of the artist instead of a descriptive name of the product. I'm sure some of you have huge libraries. How do you handle this?
Could I perhaps rename those folders with more descriptive names if I do so consistently in data, people, runtime etc? Or, what's a better plan?
The staff here at Clueless Newbie Productions thanks you very much.
I never use "smart content" anymore. I just cathegorise everything I have - purchased content, content that came with the base program, freebies, self-created content - and only work from my cathegories.

Smart Content and categroies aren't competing - Smart Content shows categorised content, optionally filtered by the context (what is selected etc.).

Yes, I've finally got the hang of Smart Content, though I still do get confused on occasion.
What I'm trying to organize is the Content Manager. Hmm... I think for now instead of trying to rework the DAZ system and probably create a big mess, I'll just undock the Content Manager and move it to my 2nd monitor where my geezer eyes can more clearly see the file structure.
Hylas, thanks for the tutorial. I'm unable to see it properly in Firefox or Chrome, but I may try again later. I don't really understand the whole category feature of DAZ yet, so I should probably not screw around too much right now.
Ok, so I've installed a clothing item. Looks good on the T figure. When I add a pose the figure goes in to the pose correctly, but the clothing item stays where it was originally in the T pose.
Or, if I select both the Gen figure AND the clothing item, the clothes try to follow figure in to pose but don't really get there.

Thanks as always.
If you select the outfit and loking in the Parameters pane, does the Fit button show the name of the base figure? if not click the button and select the figure.

Hmm.... I clicked on the clothing item in the scene tab, and then went to preferences pane. Don't see a fit button there.
Then I tried right clicking on the clothing in scene tab. I choose "Fit item to..." and then choose Gen 8 character in the dialog that appears, checking "parent to target". Still no workie.
Best I can tell, the problem is not with the clothing. I've tried various clothing items and it's always the same. The clothing item goes on the actor and looks good, until I try to move any part of the body near the clothing and then the clothing falls apart. The body punches through the clothing and the clothing becomes a mess.
I've tried parenting the clothes on the body, and the dialog for that seems simple enough, but it has no effect.
This must be something I don't understand, because I don't see others reporting this issue. Best guess, there is some process that comes after applying the clothing to the body that I'm not getting.
Hi Richard, no, I don't yet really understand what a morph is.
However, I just came across some other clothes which did work correctly when the figure's pose is adjusted. So maybe it was those other clothing items that were the issue. Or maybe I didn't know how to fix those items, or maybe the 3D realm is an immature industry where every other file doesn't work. I obviously have no idea.
However, the fact that you don't have an answer yet suggests that there may be something wrong with those particular clothing objects. If I was doing something wrong you'd likely be able to point to what that is, but obviously you can't be expert on every clothing item I might download from somewhere.
So far, all my clothing etc are free items, so perhaps that's the problem. Maybe it's a "get what you pay for" operation. I'll keep experimenting and will report any new information I can develop.

There are many such tutorials around, both videos and text-based, Jake. Here's one by Sickleyield to get you started:

I have one on my website.
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=127
Thanks guys, very helpful.
@Wilmap, I found your video on Youtube, very nicely done, thanks. Here's the link for anyone else who may have this question.
Sorry but that isn’t my video.
Basically just find DAZ library folder, and copy paste the files.
For this example, I'm using a free hair from zoro_d
Link : https://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/everyday-hair-style-for-genesis-8-male-s-/80194
1. Extract the zip file.
2. Find DAZ library folder on your computer. If you confused, please follow the steps bellow.
- Go to Content Library panel, click any official DAZ product. In my screenshot is Genesis 8 Male > Hair > Armani Hair.
- Right click on the thumbnail and choose Browse to File.
3. The DAZ library folder showing up.
Folder location in windows10: C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\People\Genesis 8 Male\Hair\Armani Hair
4. Pay attention to folder location of freebies and DAZ library, both must be same. And then copy paste the file.
E.g. Copy the folder inside "Hair" folder (People > Genesis 8 Male > Hair), to DAZ library "Hair" folder (People > Genesis 8 Male > Hair).
5. Repeat the process for "Data" folder.
6. Repeat the process for "Support" folder, (Runtime > Support).
7. Repeat the process for "Textures" folder, (Runtime > Textures)
8. Done. You'll find your freebies on Content Library panel.
*Sorry For My Bad English.
@Wilmap, thanks also for Daz Studio 101 Tutorials.

I do not make video tutorials, so please don’t keep saying those are mine, they are not. Thank you
Sorry @Wilmap, I'm obviously confused here. Duh....
Please allow me to thank you for all the free content on your website then.
That’s OK. I’m female and don’t do videos. I just make clothing and props.
Thanks AmKris, and others. Let's see if I'm getting this, please correct me as needed.
I'm on a Mac and here's a file path:
Users/user/Documents/Daz 3d/Studio/My Library
1) So do all freebies go in the My Library folder?
--------------
2) Can I organize the contents of the My Library folder by creating subfolders in any manner I choose?
--------------
3) As example, if I download a freebie from Wilmap called XYZ, could I create a subfolder like this...
My Library/Wilmap/XYZ
... and then (after unzipping the download) place all files contained in the zip in the XYZ folder?
--------------
4) What can I do or not do within the My Library folder?
--------------
I probably have some of this wrong, please don't hesitate to say so if true.
Thanks again!
You have a nice collection on your site, I like the layout of your site, very easy to use. I'm experimenting with one of your clothing files now.
Ok, I haven't got it yet.
I downloaded Sweet Spring Dress for Gen 8 female from Wilmap.
I unzipped the file.
I put these folders....
data, People and Runtime
... in to this location
My Library/Wilmap/Sweet Spring Dress
Daz reports it can not find the files in Runtime
Thanks again.

Thank you Hylas. This sounds promising. The file path I'm seeing again is...
Users/user/Documents/Daz 3d/Studio/My Library
The only subfolders I have under My Library are Presets and Scenes.
Should I manually create subfolders such as Runtime/Support, Runtime/textures, People/Genesis 8 Female/Clothing etc?
Are you using mac or Windows? Macs are a bit trickier to use in this (although maybe less than they were, I'm hazy on the current state).
Aha! I got Spring Dress installed! I just copied Wilmap's file structure over in to My Library, which created the base folders I didn't yet have.
I'll try some more and be back with more stupid questions as needed. :-)
Thanks to everybody for your assistance.

Ok, here's today's clueless newbie question regarding installing freebies.
I now have a small collection of freebies in my Content Manager. It seems I've already lost track of what is what, given that the folders for each product are the name of the artist instead of a descriptive name of the product. I'm sure some of you have huge libraries. How do you handle this?

How DAZ organises its content is a nightmare and one of the most obviously outdated aspects of the program... so don't feel bad!
This helped me a lot: http://stonefeather.co/tutorial-1
I never use "smart content" anymore. I just cathegorise everything I have - purchased content, content that came with the base program, freebies, self-created content - and only work from my cathegories.

Then I tried right clicking on the clothing in scene tab. I choose "Fit item to..." and then choose Gen 8 character in the dialog that appears, checking "parent to target". Still no workie.
It seems this is a feature I don't yet grasp.
The clothing is a figure, not a static prop?
The figure is Gen 8 female, the clothing is a bathing suit.
It appears I don't understand (can't find) the fit feature, or perhaps there is something wrong with the clothing, or both? Or something else.
Best I can tell, the problem is not with the clothing. I've tried various clothing items and it's always the same. The clothing item goes on the actor and looks good, until I try to move any part of the body near the clothing and then the clothing falls apart. Are you using a custom morph on the figure?
Hi Richard, no, I don't yet really understand what a morph is.
However, I just came across some other clothes which did work correctly when the figure's pose is adjusted. So maybe it was those other clothing items that were the issue.
