Uninstall, Reinstall, what about saved files

I have some characters and textures that I have converted with Genx, plus some scenes I have saved as subsets...if I uninstall all my products and reinstall them to a new folder ( I've decided my system is no good and there must be a better way..lol) will my saved products still load or will I get a bunch of errors saying I can't find this or that file?

That depends on where you saved them. I save my work inside my DAZ content folder. When I update I copy my folders and then Put them back in the New content folder. Be warned they will not work until all the used content is installed again.

so all my files are installed to my external hard drive E: and my saved files are in my documents folder on my C drive. Does that mean they would not work if I uninstalled and reinstalled everything on my E drive to just one large content folder as right now I have them in different folders depending on what type of file they are such as props buildings gen1 gen2 animals etc. Now I have decided it would be easier to install into just one folder and then categorize from there. I also assume I would lose the categorize I have already done

Shouldn't be a problem. The situation is that when you tell D|S where your content locations are, it doesn't matter which content location any particular file is in — as far as D|S is concerned they're all One Big Content with everything in it. The same goes for your saved files for scenes, materials, etc. This is why file references don't need to go all the way back to the drive name, it only matters where the file is inside any one of your defined content locations.

The thing about saving into a content folder is because this system only works if you do exactly that. If you save a scene or a materials preset anywhere outside one of your Content locations — so that you can't find it in your Content Library tab — this flexible system is bypassed and all references in your saved files are absolute, pointing exactly and only to where the files are right now. This means if you move anything, you'll start getting errors.

Yeah exactly SpottedKitty, Saving inside a mapped directory gives you a relaitive path with the opposite being if you save outside a mapped directory and then the path becomes fixed. This may help you http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/7829/

ok these are the paths to where my saved files are and they are mapped in ds and show up in my content library tab, so now if I reinstall everything to my E:/3D Content folder as long as that path is mapped in studio all is good and my files will still load without errors? sorry for all the questions but it took a lot to accomplish the stuff I have done so far and I don't want that to be wasted effort by messing up my files

As long as you map those folders BACK to DAZ Studio it should still work once all the Called (needed) content is installed again.
