okay, it's not supposed to look like water and I suppose I could poke a tenacule out of the dark and call it good but
There's a hole in the ground
and the light won't go down.
----
I noticed when I did the large render that I wasn't getting much light in the basement entrance ...
so I pumped up the light in the basement but no real gain
---
in iray all the street lights including those just out of sight are sources of light
each floor of the house has a 20ft long by 1 foot square light emitter and the ball on the barber pole is a light.
---
the 3dl render with just one wimpy point and two spots lights up the basement entry
--
the main iray render was an hour plus and was completely finished
---
dome is off .. theroretically just scene light ..
but all of a sudden I wonder if there's a ground plane in the lighting part that's acting up.
well, according to this there's no ground turned on?

Turn Draw Ground under Render Settings/Environment to OFF, either that or try setting Ground Position Mode to Manual instead of Auto.

stick something lower like a plane so iray puts the ground there?

    thanks
    ----

I made sure the ground plane was set to off and even set it way down lower and no difference ...
but what I forgot was I was using my basic street block set
and that in order to go below ground level I set the opacity of the dirt between the sidewalks to zero..  not visible to the eye but apparently visible to the iray
so while iray won't go thru walls .. it also won't  go through things that aren't there
    ---
hmm good be the materal for the base hasn't been converted to iray yet.
    ---
have to try that next ... converted the dirt .. ground plane to iray material but iray still sees it  interacts even though it has zero opacity

so I guess I'll have to rebuild all that street base
    ----
So iray is like cats.. it can see things that aren't there

use geometry editor tool to select the verices and rightclick hide selected

  • I'm working on the street base as a commercial product .. I doubt that would be what the end user would want to do...

but I'll try it for this scene and can always use to just cut the ground out from under my feet

  • making them invisible works..
what the hell is the difference between invisible and no opacity?
but for the time being I can chop the middle out of the blocks and work on an alternative design
