Character far from center causes black eyes and scalp artifacts

So after searhing a possible cause of black sclera and stripes on a forehead of my character I realised that it was because my character was far from 0,0,0, center.

The scene is big and there are 5 characters at the same time with a lot of props.

Is there a workaround for this issue or we have to parent all stuff to a character, center it, make a shot, then reparent to another, zero position, render that character, rinse and repeat?

Is there a documented maximum distance from the center I can place my character?

  • One way to work around this is to put your character(s) at world centre and move your environment  until the characters are positioned where you want them to be in relation to that environment.

That's not a great solution if you have 5 characters in widely distributed positions in a large environment, but I am not aware of another way around it.  It seems strange that such a reproducible bug hasn't been fixed yet.

  • Thanks.

    What about maximum distance? Anyone?

  • I've been able to render at offsets nearly 1000 x 1000x 500 units by the Daz metric with 5 characters, all rather close together tbh.

How far off origin are you trying to render?

I already put them in group close together, parented all stuff to that group, centered.

    characteer is @ 139, -5, -2

black stripes on head from hair scalp

    moved to 139, 0,10

    same

  • zeroed - all artifacts gone

  • moved to 140, 0, 0

    again black stripes on forehead.

Come on it's just a few meters.

What is the rule for it?

    0,0,140 black stripes on forehead

    0,0,-315 same.

This is killing my project now

Submit a request to customer service to ask. Here in the forum, we are just a bunch of users who have no insight into the inner workings of Daz Studio or Iray. Or experiment yourself to derive the answer and post it to inform others.

  • It's crazy that this bug hasn't been fixed after all this time. I guess Daz must reckon that 99% of users are just loading a single female figure, adding the skimpiest outfit they can find, and hitting render. So not enough people are bothered about it for it to be worth their time trying to fix it.

  • Well...

The render I did was of girls in bikinis but it was part of a story. I put them in the pool on the second floor of 22 Parker Road by Petipet. It's a lot further away from the origin than Quazaque's render and I had no trouble. I'd post one of the renders but I'm not sure any of them would get past the forum's rules.

  • I reset base sun and sky light preset  - and this issue is almost invisible when character @ 300,0,300

there was something wrong with sun and sky system

  • I've been working with a character which seems to have it happen pretty reliably. I'm experimenting with substituting a different character at the same position to see if I get the same result. I'm trying to figure out if it is something to do with the texture or maps that is causing this.

I had a discussion about this also occuring in Carrara using Octane where it was determined it was a path tracing issue, in my case ray epsilon had to be infinite as the Genesis 8 corneas and sclera very close

in studio it apparently occurs if the path length is set to certain values such as 1

This also appears with just scene lighting. Doesn't have to be an hdri, sun & sky, etc. I've been expanding hair by increments of .1% and have gotten ok results. Certain hair can have the skull opacity reduced without too many issues. Its a really ridiculous thing to have to do, honestly. Very annoying.
  • check the path length parameters

Very good point and something I completely forgot about! Adjusting these did work for me, too! Thanks Wendy! Can't believe that... I was just having problems with a new project and trying to remember what I did the last time I had this issue! Its almost always with the Linda pony tail, too...

Daz Studio . please fix this sclera turning black and scalp stripe problem ASAP . Daz is such a great program and it should not be looked at as a toy program. i use it for animation and not just pics. if you don't fix this ASAP then this program becomes a toy program and not worth investing in. or buying any more things from the DazStore. because then the whole program and products become junk , kid stuff . i made a character in Daz , put her in a space ship i modeled in Maya , made an HDR , bought some city blocks from DazStore . and while she is flying through the city.. her eyes went black and her bangs went funny.. WTF .. this would never happen in Maya . please fix this ASAP
