Emissive lights aren't shown in the viewport. However, you can at least get enough light by turning off the Preview Lights option in the Window menu. Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-L for Windows based PCs.
I finally git it to work (kind of). It seems to render correctly. However the preview (camera + nvidia iray) still comes out black.
It will be. Because the preview engine doesn't have everything that the full rendering engine does. The best you can do is use Ctrl-L to turn off the lighting preview so that at least you can see your scene well enough to pose your figure, etc.
Thanks for your help. Ctrl-L was very helpful but not quite what I'm looking for.
Watch the video I posted at 24:05. His preview window shows how the emissive lighting changes in real time, as he fiddles with the luminus efficacy and emission temperature. If he can do it, why can't I ? :)

Where is your plane? Try using the top/front/left views to make sure it is correctly placed to light the figure.
Edit : It works now (only after reload). It renders correctly but the preview window is still dark. Any ideas ?

The Iray preview mode will show emissive lighting if it is set to Photoreal in the Draw Settings pane

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for, thanx !
I find photoreal in render settings, but not in draw settings.
You need to select Drawstyle : Nvidia Iray, then go to Drawing, Draw Mode, drop down and select Photoreal.
