Subsurface toon shaders; How to apply to non-human figures?

Hello!
My knowledge of SSS is pretty low, but shouldn't there be a way to apply the shaders to non-genesis objects? I have the gummy/plastics SSS packs and I can control-click to add to surface and choose effects with the image maps or not, and that works fine. When I do it with the Toon Subsurface Shaders it does not work. Can anyone explain why it doesn't and how I could get around that?
For example, I can make a Sphere primitive, ctrl-click, say, Purple gummy and choose "Selected Surfaces" and "Replace Image" and that will give me a gummy purple sphere. Now, I do the same thing with the "Tan" skin and absolutely nothing happens.
What gives? I want my flesh colored primitives!

The Toon Skins presets are materials meaning they apply to specific surface names. You can see this if you select, for example, Hitomi then go to the Surface Pane and click on 'Genesis' and all the zones light up then apply Skin Martian and only the skin zones change. The primitives don't have the same named material zones.
It is possible to apply the shaders to an object it's just a bit more complicated.
1. Add your primitive
2. Go to Polygon Group Editor mode and select all of the poly's on the primitive that you want to apply the shader to.
3. Right click on the selected poly's and select Create Surface From Selected.
4. Give the surface a name that matches one of the skin names (I used 2_SkinTorso below)
5. Apply your shader.
It's possible to apply the shader to more complex objects but selecting all of the correct poly's on a high poly model might be a bit more work than you want to do :).
In this one I applied the Martian 2 shader to the sphere.
Bahahaha it was really just a name comparison. Ugh, I totally thought about that, too. I had no idea how to check, though.
Thanks!
Yeah, I had just done a mini tutorial on using the polygon editing tool in my Art Studio thread- using it to make things disappear, adding material zones so you can change those polygonal surfaces- it's a really cool tool. If anyone wants to see it in action:
