Added Lighting does not work.

Hi,

Bit baffled. I have created additional lights in a scene, but they do not appear to work, be they point, spot or distant. The default lights are OK, but anything else I place has no effect in preview or render. I have tried setting all of them to the same as the working lights and by increasing intensity and lumens massively, but no effect. If I turn off the original lights, my scene is in complete blackness.

Tone mapping is set to 'Scene only'.

Thanks,

Chrissy.

  • What do you mean by default/original lights? Is this a specific scene or a general issue?

  • Apologies, I meant the first lights I added. I  am just starting out at this and am using the generic 'West Park'

  • One obvious question is are they blocked by part of the model?

have you tried duplicating the original lights? Its under Edit.

If it is no to all of the above then I would surmise it is two things to look at. One if you need higher lumens, leaving Intensity at default and second your exposure setting (render settings) needs to be lowered from 13 to say about 7. You can just increase the lumen out put really high and leave exposure at 13. Don't forget Iray is a photo real render engine meaning you need loads of light getting into the camera just like in the real world. :)

  • Well, I'm not sure what happened. I deleted all lights and re-created them and now spots and linear points are OK, but not point lights!!!

Thamks for your help guys.I shall  continue to tinker and see what works. It was just that I could see the effect of one light, but not another. Not even by turning off and on in an otherwise black-dark preview!

What took me a long time to figure out is the importance of double-checking the position of the lights, relative to the figure or object you want to illuminate: Top View, Left and Right Views etc.

At the moment I don't understand why/how when you have point lights in a set (example: https://www.daz3d.com/idg-easy-iray-studio ) there is a sort of cone symbol showing which way the light is going. But when you create your own point light, in DAZ Studio this cone or visual aid is not present. Huh?!

Also, if I want the kind of side-lighting that resembles the night sky when there is a crescent moon (or the planets in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey) I only seem to be able to do this with 3DL distant lights, not Iray. Perhaps it has to be a spotlight, moved further out from the object being illuminated, and with a greater lumens value as suggested by Szark?

Point lights don't have light cones, they have a sort of starburst-shaped thingy instead. It's the spot lights that have the cone shape.
