skin builder or manager?

Hi,

I have been thinking about making skins for my figures. I come across these two products, both seem to be good based on the things I read about them. Anyone could share the experience with both of them? Are there anything else I'm missing. What are the pro and cons for choosing one?

Scares, veins, coloring, makeup,  could I sell things I make with them, etc...? cons: only for female, etc...

I have more experience with Skin Builder 8 than Ultimate Iray Skin Manager, but I've used both.

I really like Skin Builder 8 because of how easy and intuitive it is. There are seperate tabs and sections for you to customize your skin with veins, freckles, blotches, makeup, brows etc etc - and the results often come out looking nice. With Skin Builder 8, you can make skins to sell and there's even a tab where it explains how you need to save the skins (file names, etc). They say it outright that it is a merchant resource so you can sell the skins you make. Personally I have never fully made a skin because I use the program for touching up pre-existing skins. But I have tried and the process is simple. Do note that I'm just a casual user of this program and not a person who intends to sell my work so my opinion might differ from what a published artist considers publishable.

Ultimate Iray Skin Manager I have also used and there's a lot more detailed options than Skin Builder 8, but like I said earlier I'm a person who is casually using the program and not making stuff to publish. So a lot of the time I get confused by all the options in the program (gamma, etc). I'm sure with some research and prior knowledge the program is much simpler to use. When I use the program to enhance pre-existing skins the result is very detailed. I use it to increase bump or normal and I am satisfied with the results. I think this program is better for enhancing/adjusting skins than actually creating them, but I believe you can create skins with it... just never tried. You can use the enhancements for skins you sell.

What I like is the combined process - you can create a skin in Skin Builder 8 first, then use Ultimate Iray Skin Manager to tweak and enhance the skin to create an awesome final product.

    Those are my thoughts.

Skin builder 8 can be used to make commercial addons, but you have to make quite a few changes to make it "your" product and not just what Skin Builder gives you. The skins you use for a commercial product have to be the ones from the product or another merchant resource

Ultimate Iray skin converter is not a merchant resource and can't be used for commercial or any free product, only personal use.

Can this be used along side merchant resources?

Of course every skin shader you create this way and even the text files you might generate you are allowed to give share sell them. You will be the creator of the shader the skin manager is only the tool. The only thing you are not allowed to share is the manager itself, but what you create thanks to it is yours. "

Can the results of this be freely used in sold products?

(Like, use the Skin Manager to adjust a new skin to your liking)

Yes you can use the result in sold products."

I was thinking along these lines too, but budget comes first XD.  I want to get some of my things published within a year or might even get a PA status + doing things in Renpy (part of that props, people would be sold). For that, I'm measuring what kind of plug-ins, add-on would come handy to save me lots of time in case of people modelling, props, hexa etc...

I'll push the png-s, jpegs through picture editors for fine details etc... I don't want to make the whole thing in Photoshop that's why I'm looking for map makers.

So both of them are merchants, that's good to know. Skin Builder 8 is a bit easier but only for G8F.  Ultimate Iray Skin Manager more detailed but one should know what she/he is touching with that parameter tweak.

Anything else I'm missing for skins?

They have Skin Builder for G3F, it's just a separate product called Skin Builder 3, if that helps :)
