Strange shader behavior on objects

I have got some props here which were designed for Poser originally. When rendered in iRay, they will come out very saturated unless I place an actual light in the scene. Using emissive surfaces doesn't work. I have tried converting the surfaces in Uber iray but to no avail.
Any ideas? :)

Does it depend on the type of light added? Is the environment dome on? There really isn't that much information to go on.
I tinkered with it a bit more. Apparently, it will render properly only if the environment mode doesn't include the "scene" element. It works with: "dome only" and "sun/sky only" but goes nuts if you do a "scene only" or a "dome and scene". In that case of figure, no light is loaded in the scene I created.
If I switch to a "scene only" or a "dome and scene" environment type, the only way to make the prop render is to include a light (spotligh, distant...) and then the render will have normal colors.
All of this was done with the headlamp off.
I would check the UV map of the item as well
Hmm What do you mean exactly Matty? The prop's uvmap is set as "default" and no other option seems available.
Do you have a screen shot? I know you said the headlamp was off, but what you are describing sounds a lot like the headlamp being on without being able to see what you mean.

I hope it's ok to link; I couldn't embed it in my post directly.
I checked, the emission is set to black.
