lighting and focus
Two things I'm really struggling with over time - how best to set lighting, and also how to achieve a really crisp focus. Is it possible to turn off the default light? I like dark work, and it seems difficult sometimes to get those acute lighting set-ups. I keep wondering if there is a way to remove the default. Also... I'm not expecting to be a pro, but I find that most of my renders, no matter how densely pixeled, just don't look crisp like some I've seen. I have played with the depth of field setting, but I find I'm mostly just getting soft edges. Would appreciate any help anyone might like to give, to include suggestions for tutorials that might answer some of these dilemmas. Thanks as always.

The default turns off once you place a light in the scene.
It seems like it's still there, because there is a shadow that comes from that default light that seems to still be there. If the shadow is still there, and the only light I put in the scene comes from the other direction, I would assume the default is staying on. Is that something I need to toggle?
If you are manually adding all of the lighting you want, make sure on the Environment tab of the render settings that you have it set to "Scene Only" instead of "Dome and Scene" which is the default.
thanks, that should help. I'll give it a try.
