Added lights and rendering

Hi,

I've been reading a few threads on similar problems, but I can't track down the right solution.

I have a scene with an added spotlight that fails to show in an IRay render. I have cranked up the luminosity to insane values, but no difference. I can turn off all lights, leaving my scene black dark, with nothing visible, but if I then render it , it is still lit somehow!

In Render Settings - General, Auto headlamp is set to 'Never'

In Render Settings - Environment, Draw Dome is 'Off' and Environment Mode is 'Scene only'.

Camera Headlamp Mode is set to 'Off'.

What have I missed?

Cheers!

Chrissy

  • Which camera are you looking through to render? Some people use the Perspective instead of the Default Camera. This has several drawbacks, since it doesn't have all the controls of a true camera; one of them, I think, is that you can't turn off the Headlight.

Not sure why the spotlight doesn't seem to be working. Have you moved and turned it to point at whatever the camera's looking at?

  • I am rendering through two or three cameras - not perspective.

I think the spotlight is working, but the other lighting overwhelms it. I am not sure where this other light is coming from. I have tried switching everything off, so that the scene is completely dark, but when I render, the scene appears as if in normal daylight.

  • That sounds like the default Environment Light. Are you sure the Environment Mode in Render Settings>Environment is still set at "Scene Only"? These dome lights don't appear in the Viewport unless you set it to Iray Preview.

You were right SpottedKitty. Many thanks.

There are so many settings to remember. My apologies for asking such a noob question.

I had set this up correctly at one time, but I must have forgotten to save before re-opening.

    Thanks for your patience,

    Christine.

  • Don't worry too much about it — this in particular isn't really a noob question, it's more an issue of D|S taking any opportunity to drive us users round the bend.

If it's any consolation, I've been using every version of D|S since the beginning, and things like this still trip me up now and then. Getting the lighting right really is a non-trivial problem.

Most of us have been through these things and have developed some mental checklists of common mistakes that we check for now before we click on Render. Nothing to be ashamed of, just part of the learning curve. :)

  • I can't actually believe this...

Got it rendering nicely, thanks to the above. Tried another set up of the same scene and the problem is back!

This time I have definitely set the environment to 'scene only', camera headlights 'off' and auto headlight to 'never' (I've checked numerous times), I have then turned all scene lights off (including a fire and candles) and rendered my pitch black scene - which comes out perfectly lit!.

    ???????
