Missing Files That Aren't Linking

edited February 2019 in New Users

It seems like every time I go back to DS after so long the files all have missing pieces. It's possible that these scenes were from my other computer, but I really don't think they were. Stuff always comes up missing. When it asks me, I do choose to install the pieces that are missing (which shouldn't be) and manually locate all the files, but still, in the end, certain pieces are missing and show up as boxes when the file finally opens. Sometimes reopening the file again without saving lets me locate more different files manually. The thing is, none of the files have moved. Even if it was from a different drive, the structure I have is the same accross my computers. I know the way I have stuff separated by runtimes probably doesn't help with DS, because when it lets me locate them, it always keeps defaulting to the last one I did. Is there some way to change the file linking? I mean, they are all under a main runtime (I say runtime, but they aren't exactly runtimes now because they include all the DS content, etc. I use the DIM to load everything), but it should recognize for example G8F, Hair, Sets & Props, etc. I have all these "runtimes" loaded as content directories under poser directories and daz studio directories, which I assume I have to do. I know it is saying some of the data files are missing, but DAZ Connect Data under content you can't add any.

I should have all the poser runtimes loaded under DS content too, right? because each "runtime" for example for file structure has data, People, ReadMe's, Runtime

I've put up with it manually locating files, but now it's not even giving me the option for the ones that are missing. They seem to load okay after I go through it all (at least the files so far I have done this too) but it still has a long list  of missing.

I hope it's okay to put this under new user. I've been using Poser for so many years, but DS off and on and seem to be missing things I should understand.

  • If the files are in a content directory, with the correct relative path (that is, the Runtime and Data folders are in the content directory not a sub-directory) then they should be found. As long as content is in a current content directory then DS will use only reltive paths in saved files - one possible issue is if there is one active content directory that is a sub-folder of another active content directory.

  • Sorry I realized I forgot to respond to this. I accidentally figured most of it out myself. Although I suck at understanding DAZ’s folder structures (or likely more correctly I’m just used to using Poser) and most times I search or look under product, the main problem I was having is although I installed them I never added the content directories, which I really thought I had. I think the rest might just be me. It gets me confused though, because sometimes I will look under the smart content, and it will show for something say materials and the Iray ones aren’t showing up and I’ve had to go to product under the full content tab or search. Although, some of these were Renderosity products I loaded with the package assist, so it could be that. I’m still getting the hang of using DAZ. It never helps either that I use it for awhile and then don’t have time and go back to it and forget things again lol.
