Instancing advice for Iray Rendering

The scene I created is about 1.8 GB loaded into Iray Memory. I'm using 4x GTX 1080Ti to render the scene. The computer has a Threadripper processor and 128GB of memory.

The scene has 200 UltraScatter Objects. 8x Instancing Plus objects (each instance about 10-20 pieces) and about 5 Daz Native Instancing applied.

I can render the scene at 720p using Dome Only in Iray, but if I go any higher (1080p, 4K) Daz crashes.

I set Iray's instancing option to "Memory" rather than Speed, but still getting crashes. Is there any other settings I can tweak to get this to render correctly?

  • Also, would it be more reliable to use duplicates instead of instancing? If I have 9GB of headroom on the GPUs, and 128 GB of memory to throw at the scene, is instancing pointless?

  • In case anyone is reading this in the future, I have had success now with the same scene by switching OpticX Acceleration "On" and rending in "Dome Only" up to 4k. Which is strange because generally OpticX crashes everything else I ever do. :-D
