Saving Files ?????

I created a model, made textures for it, made folders in the runtime for Geometry, props and pose and finally textures. I also include folders in presets and props under my library. With the help of someone at PFDlives, I was able to save the prop and the textures for use in Daz....I think. It occurred to me I don't have a data folder for this item and don't know if that is necessary for it to work for others. I also don't know how to make this so it's useable in Poser. I have CPM for the textures, but don't know what to use for the model itself.

Forgot to mention I am using Daz 4.5.1.56

If you are using DAZ Studio, and not supporting Poser, then it would be simpler to save as a Figure/Prop asset - the only Runtime folder you'd need would be the Textures folder with your maps (which would need to have been there when you applied them to the model.

    My advice would be:
1 - create a new folder, not in a content directory
2 - create a Runtime\Textures\Yourname\Productname folder any place the textures in that (where Yourname is CalieVee or whatever you want to use)
3 - create a Props folder in the folder you created in 1, then whatever sub-folders you think are right for your item
4 - in DAZ Studio open the Content Library pane, right click on DAZ Studio Formats, click Add a Base Directory and add the folder you created in 1
5 - import your OBJ, apply the textures, set other material options
6 - Got to File>Save as>Support Asset>Figure/Prop Asset, go to the folder you created in 2, enter a name for the prop and hit save
7 - In the options dialogue, make sure the Asset Directory, at the top, is set to the folder you created in 1. Enter Yourname for Vendor Name, Productname for Product Name and an item name for the thing itself (you could save multiple items as part of a single product). Setting the metadata, if you are going to make this a freebie, is optional. You want all the options checked for Asset definitions. If the item is parented, and you want that saved, check Smart Parenting. Compression is optional - it will make the file smaller on disc, but harder to edit if you need to fix a path for some reason. Click Accept. That will save the preset for loading the item, in props\whatever, and the data files, in \Data\Yourname\productname\
8 - If you want other mateial options, apply them to the model and save Materials presets to the materials folder in the \Props\Whatever folder
9 - Add your readme to the folder you created in1
10 - zip up everything in the folder you created in 1 - you should now have an item ready for testing.

I saved the item as figure/prop asset, didn't create metadata, don't have data files (completely slipped my mind), I saved the textures as material presets, so I have a my library/props...my library/presets/...my library/runtime/textures. I then used CPM to save poser material files so I also have the my library/runtime/pose. What I also have is the obj in the geometry folder and I have a runtime/prop folder ready for pp2 files but no pp2 files?

Is the fact I don't have data files going to be a problem (it loads fine for me)?
Does it matter that the material files are in a presets folder instead of the props folder?
How do I get the pp2 files?

I don't have Poser, but I am sure I can get someone to use their Poser program to save the files for me to get the pp2 files, if I can't get them through Daz.

You do have Data files, unless DS malfunctioned - in My Library\Data\Author name you chose\... since you saved to My Library (the path you are saving to is usually the one in the options dialogue).

There is a free script to create a PP2 file, I think it's in the old free scripts thread which you can reach from my signature.

I would move the materials to a sub folder of the prop folder - it keeps everything nicely together - but they will work from either.

Ok I found the data files, had no idea it would make the folders for me so that's less work...lol

I found the obj to pp2 and will give that a try, if it works then my work is done.

Will consider your suggestion about the material files in the props folder. Might be less annoying for those searching for files if there are fewer places to look.

I'm having issues with the data folder again. This time it's an outfit for Genesis2. I do not have that model installed, but I installed the outfit no problem and it loads no problem. I created some textures and have tried several naming options to try to save these textures and they just are not creating a data file.

What is installed in Daz 4.5 is the outfit created by someone else, I created folders in runtime/textures and created them under the presets/materials, just like last time. I go to file/save as/material presets, when the window pops up, I direct it to presets/materials/my author folder/item folder, I click accept. It saves the duf files but nothing shows up in data.

I tried putting my author folder in data, but that didn't worl. I tried putting inside the author folder the item named folder and again nothing happened. I even tried completely removing my folder from data so it would auto generate the folder and files like last time and still nothing showed up.

Last time I created a prop and did all the saving in Daz. This time I am using someone else's prop and wonder if maybe there is a different way to save? Also wondered if it had something to do with it being for G2 which I do not have installed. Oh and the creator of the item has all the files needed to use it in Daz. I also checked that folder in case they somehow saved there but they didn't.

A materials preset shouldn't save anything to the Data folder, nor should other presets. It's only things in File>Save as>Support Asset that will create entries in the Data folder (edit: or scenes containing items that haven't yet been saved as assets). Are your presets not working?

I think maybe it was just too late at night and assumed data files were created for everything. All I am trying to save are the textures I made for the outfit and if presets don't have data files then I was not doing anything wrong. I will save again (deleted everything I made when it wouldn't work the way I thought), then have someone who has the outfit test my textures to make sure everything is working right.

The prop at the beginning of this thread and these textures are the only things I have created and saved since Daz 2 and it takes some getting use to with this version of Daz. By the way, thanks for that help with the prop, it turned out great and works like a charm in both Daz and Poser and on a Mac as well. If interested, that prop is being offered as a freebie at Fantasy Attic Halloween Giveaway sometime this week. Think DarkAngel posted a link about it somewhere on the freebie forum.

    Thanks again for your help.
