Avatars broken again?

I've been trying to change my avatar all day, to no avail. Is there a magic word or something?

    Are you trying jpg's or png's

    png. I'll try jpg.

    But never mind, now it's there. Go figure.

    Maybe I just needed to close and reopen the browser.

    Or maybe it was the magical avatar fairy. I heard that the web team was eventually going to add one. :)

    The forum doesn't seem to flag files as updated correctly, so you may need to refresh or even force refresh to see a new avatar if you don't change the format.

    is it still true if the current avatar is jpg to change it, one has to use png and vise a versa?
    I need to update my avatar soon.

    Every time I've changed my avatar its taken a while for me to be able to see the update. I've checked with others and they will see the new avatar, but it won't appear for me until I do a hard refresh and clear cache and cookies.
