How do I Change an Object's Color Only?

Hello,
Is there a method, or a procedure shader product available, that can change the color of an object's material without effecting the object's details (textures)?
When I change the base color it seems to effect the detailed texture, and when I use any of the available shaders on the market they completely wipe out the objects detailed textures.
To show this, I have attached example 1 which is the revolver I am using from the DAZ Shop, with the default material (before I messed with it).
Example 2 shows where I used a gold metal shader on the barrel, and then changed the base color on the grip from the Surfaces tab. Both methods seem to destroy the original gun details in the barrel and the grip. The metal barrel no longer has the round logo, and the rubber grip has lost the criss-cross design on the handle.
All I want to do is change the color without destroying the object's details.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On PC ctrl-click on the material and you will get a dialog box that will prevent overwriting textures. (Material change)
For a shader change alone, select the item to be changed and go to the surfaces tab. Slect the specifc surface to be changed, then doubleclik the particualr shader.
You could try holding down ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac) as you doible-click the gold preset and then choose the Ignore option for maps - however, as I recall a lot of the Iray shaders that come with DS have limited channels that will take maps (in this case presumably bump or normal). Changing the Base Colour without removing the map or applying a different shader shouldn't be directly affecting the pattern, though, so I'm not sure what is happening theer - exacly what steps are you taking to do this?
I attached a few screenshots of what I am doing. I hope that helps... I only changed the base color on the grip, but the grip as you can see from the screenshots has a UV Map? I'm not sure what the file is called that loads for an object's surface, but I have not messed with it.
Do I need to go into this actual image file and change the color on it as opposed to fiddling with the Base color??
Thanks Richard and fastbike!
I did the Ctrl-Click method on the Base Color and it brought up a dialog box that allowed me to change the base color while preserving the gun's details.
Amazing all the little tricks you can accomplish with DAZ Studio.
