Painted Surface

This might be a weird or offbeat question, but is there any chance there is a product or utility out there that enables you to paint portions of a surface before it is rendered?
I have a bunch of shaders, but they change the entire selected surface. But let's say I just wanted to put a stripe of opposing color over the surface of a sphere, leaving most of the selected surface the same material and color as it is. Then render it in Iray so that the result is the sphere with a band of color across it.
I've looked all through the DAZ Shop, and while there are many shaders and special effects, there doesn't seem to be anything like this.
Should I be looking at decals or something like that? I really wanted to apply my own effects this way, without using L.I.E. presets or other effects that are limited.

That sounds like a job for the Layered Image Editor - you'd need a mask image, black wheer you want the original to show through and white where you want the paint applied, as well as the paint itself (unless you just want a solid colour) - the mask, and paint, would need to follow the figure's UV template. You would apply it by launchng the Layered Image Editor from the image menu in the Surfaces pane Editor tab (click the micro thumbnail for the current image to open the menu), then create a new layer using the paint image or a solid colour and apply the mask image to that.
Thanks Richard. I will try that.
