how do I speed up rendering on my AMD system?

I have a Ryzen 1600x, which has 6 cores. So CPU isn't an issue. My problem is using an AMD card on software optimized for Nvidia. So I have an RX 580 4gb AMD. So gaming wise, it handles everything thrown at it.

I also have dual-channel ram set up. 16gb @ 3000mhz. So good there. When I get loading more than two characters, things slow down a lot, especially when dealing with gen8 females and their hair lol. They must have some big textures?

Been there in the past and got the t-shirt.  Right now the biggest boost to performance would come from installing an NVIDA graphics card.  To avoid limiting scene content too much, I would buy something with 8Gb rather than 4.  Any other tweaks you make in the absence of that aren't going to make a huge difference to your rendering speed.

IRAY is Nvidia exclusive. You need an Nvidia card to run IRAY. 3Delight should be comparable on either

depend of the use, close details or not

you can accelerate the render by change the resolution on,characters high to normal 30% to 40% faster render
    - also on all clothes and hair
apply again the high resolution only when it needs

As you know, you can certainly render using Iray, but you're stuck with the slower CPU-only rendering mode unless you have a modern Nvidia video card. If you decide to purchase a new video card in order to speed things up, get as much video RAM as you can afford. The entire scene's geometry has to fit in the video card's memory, or Iray drops right back into the slow, CPU-only mode.

Use a different renderer than Iray.

Cycles in Blender is one such. Use 3Delight, which is CPU only.

But the best nvidia card you can afford if you want to use Iray. Ideally 8GB minimum, although its doable with less. As many cores as you can get, afford - 10 or 20 series cards, and probably 20 for preference, even though they are currently over-priced imo. Maybe when the new features arrive they will be value for money.

If you want to work with iray then replace the rx580 with a gtx1060 and you'll be fine. If you get a 8g card such us the 1070 you may be short on ram, though the rule of thumb is about ram = 2x vram, but a little extra always helps.

Another option is to use reality. That should work fine with amd gpus.

Otherwise use 3delight that's cpu based. In this case there are a couple of plugins to heavily enhance it and also turn it into a pbr engine.

And the scene optimizer addon is a must in any case, you just can't work without.

I found that at 4Gb (GTX 970), two characters was OK.  More than two is pushing it and more than likely too many.  It's not entirely linear though because I did 6 characters with 8Gb just fine, though my CPU is ageing (4790K) so that struggled with Daz somewhat.  You could do with less card RAM if you're prepared to cut down map sizes and so on, which I wasn't (too much like hard work for me!).

Consider that most textures are 4K, and unless you render details at ultra-high resolution this is not really needed. The average full-hd render is fine with 2K textures. By resizing 4K to 2K you work with 1/4 vram. So if you need 8G vram with 4K textures then you need 2G vram with 2K textures. Compression apart.

That's why the scene optimizer is a must. If you're trying to work without you'll always find yourself limited, even with a 8G card.
