Realistic Skin Rendering

Hi there, can anyone help me out on how I can arrive with arealistic skin texture? I mean with those tiny cracks and translucency? I've heard about products like Anagennesis but I dont think that I'm going to buy any software in the near future. So how can someone achieve realistic skin textures? Do i need to apply maps (which I don't also know how to use)? Are there certain settings that can be tweaked for more realistic effect? How do I set up lighting? I know that I can't post tons of questions but the thing is I want to know a technique a certain method of an artist on how he comes up with a relistic skin effect.

You should try posting this question in the commons. As a warning, though, the answer is going to be something like "a lot of trial and error"

I kind of feel like people keep their secrets to really good skin under lock and key.

I agree with Paradigm that you have posted to the wrong forum.  However as it is a DS problem I think you should move your thread to the DS forum.

Click on the gear icon on your original post and click "Edit" On that Screen go to the drop down on the left hand side and change the Category to DS discussion, then Save Comment.

What they are doing most often is making the skin glossy and often adjusting one or more of these to have bigger values if they are used (they'll have an image in their slot if they are used): bump, normal, and displacement.

Also note that they usually post work their renders to blur them enough to hide that it's a render and often add a haze to the render too. Increasing contrast is another technique to add interest and hide less realistic portions of a render. And bright portrait lights that emphasize shadows..

Oh, also, the paler the skin the more reflective it is and the less detail it will show so those wanting to emphasize poses, wrinkles, and such things often use a skin texture that is darker.

And often they'll use a head scarf or hat or hood of some sort to hide the head hair mostly or completely.

Also, you probably think your renders aren't as realistic as others because so are so familiar with how you made the render but they probably are as realistic as the renders by other people.
