Difference between MATS and MATERIALS

I have many products that will include both MAT files, and MATERIAL files for the same surfaces. Which of the two is DAZ STUDIO specific? Or does it matter?

Same diff. Mats is just the more common term.

The reason I ask is that sometimes they are found in the POSE directory, and also found in the MATERIALS directory. I categorize my content, and I end up with having two versions of the same file. For example, hair colors.
With some it's easy to figure out which files are more suitable for Studio, as they have a "DS" on the icon, or a small Script icon

Using pz2 files for mats is kind of the archaic way of doing things, but it has stuck around (pre-mat room maybe? I'm not sure). As for the materials folder itself, you'll find MT5 and MC6 in there usually. DS can see MC6, but not MT5, and you have to be careful with these because if they contain Poser procedurals, they won't work right in DS no matter what.

Depends. Mat are often a shortening of Material Poses or mat poses. Mat poses are actually a user hack dating back to the P4 days. Users basically discovered how to hack Poser files to create pz2 or pose files that will apply material settings aka surface settings.

Poser 5 introduced the materials room and procedural materials. In DS, these are generally referred to as shaders.

since I only use DS can I delete these MC6 files?

As long as you have an equivalent DS file.

Yes. If you have a matching mc6 then that can be deleted. I'd suggest saving a backup of the folder just in case

Note that if the DS mats are in the Runtime folder then you must have the corresponding Poser-format file, or they will not be displayed.

    Didn't consider that

As for the reason for the duplication, before Poser 8 the Materials Library was available in Poser only in the Material Room and people didn't want to switch rooms to apply materials. Before DS 4 DAZ Studio didn't show the Materials library, so if the Poser files were to be available to DS (for direct use or to have DS files and Poser files in a common location for both apps) they needed to be in the Pose library.
