Strange box on my screen

I have a problem with a smaller, white box on my screen in the viewport. It decreases the rendering size of the image. In it's upper right corner there is a little +/- sign and I have no idea what it's for as well. I need to get rid of it but can't see how to turn it off. Thanks in advance for any help.

The white box is probably the Aspect Frame, shwoing how much of the Viewport will render - you can hide it from the option menu, the lined button in the top-right-corner or right-click the tab, but that won't change the proportions of your render, for that you need Render Settings.
The +/- is probably the exposure adjustment button if you are using nVidia Iray preview mode - click it then click an area of the Viewport to select the exposure point (though I've found it tends to blow the render out).
Thanks, but that's not it. I unchecked "Show Aspect" and all it does is fade out, It doesn't go away. I've added two images to show before and after. I want it gone, or enlarged to get the full main viewport.
Yes, that's expected - you have the nVidia Iray preview enabled still and it renders only what is inside the render area.
Okay, played around with the render settings some and found where I can change the dimensions of the white box. But I don't want that box because I can't see my image too well, the box whites-it-out. I don't know how it suddenly appeared on my screen and can't see how to get rid of it, except to hide it with Aspect Frame. But I never have seen it before either way and not in the Aux viewport.
Huh?...I'm sorry, I don't follow. I haven't made any changes and this box popped up. I'm playing around with it now and can't find a way to get rid of it so I can have it back to normal.
Do you have Render Settings - General - Dimension Preset (Global) set to use "Custom"? If you set it to "Active Viewposrt" (this first option in the drop-down list) then you should not see that box in your main viewport.
Note that if your main viewport and auxillary viewport are different shapes (my main is pretty-much square but the aux is rectangular) then the box will still appear in the inactive one representing the aspect ratio of the active one. Click from one to the other to understand what I mean.
This program is having fun with me. I've seen what you mentioned about the "Active Viewport" option but now I can find it. Earlier the viewport went to full screen and it took me several tries playing with the program to notice the little 'X' in the upper right that got rid of it. I did something during that time that changed the Render Settings option around to where I can find the menus for it. Instead something new for rendering is showing on the left of the screen and I can't find the options you mentioned. The good news is the 'white-out' box is now gone back to normal.
I think I need some Tylenol.
Thanks again for your help.
Oops, typo. I meant I couldn't find the "Active Viewport". But at least I have it working the way I want for me, for now.
Define normal - are you wanting to render everything you see in the Viewport? Then follow MelanieL's advice. Or are you just wanting a uniform look to the Viewport? Then click the Iray logo next to the camera picker button at top-right and select Texture Shaded preview mode.
I think I got it back to 'Normal'. First, it looks like the box was changing size because I also had the Aux Screen active. I went back to another screen and the box increased in size, but at first not covering all of the viewing port. But it's doing so now, not sure how, though. And my render settings screen has disappeared, it moved down to the left side of the screen with a tab and I can't find the same settings I had when I first opened it was a pop-up screen. Oh, well, as long as it doens't mess around with me I'm happy.
Thank you both for your help.
You should "Lock" the interface so you don't accidentally shift around more of those tabs/panes or turn them into floating windows.
Window>Workspace>Lock Docking/Undocking (or press Ctrl+U)
If you want your interface reset to default:
Window>Workspace>Select Layout (choose one that looks like the one you had before)
