How do you make an object glow?

I have a few objects I would like to glow but can't figure out the combination or what settings to use.  Anyone out there knows?

  • Assuming this is daz Studio, Iray or 3Delight? Are you wanting them to be light soruces, or are you wanting to surround them with a glow effect, or both?

  • Sorry, yep, it's for Daz Studio 4.10.  I want a glow effect, not a light source for now.

  • There is a Glow option in Render Settings for Iray. Another way is to create secondary mesh around the item and set that to be nearly transparent - you can do that, for example, with Create>New Geometry Shell (more tha  once if it gives the best effect) and then adjust the Offset property in the Parameters pane and the Opacity/Cutout Oapcity in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane.

  • I don't see a Glow option.  I clicked on the Render Settings tab, click on Iray, and there isn't an option for Glow.  Is it something I have to purchase seperately?

  • Sorry, I persistently get that wrong - in Render Settings Bloom was what I meant.

  • I suffer from brain-farts as well.  Where would I find "Bloom"?  I just checked under the Render Settings tab and didn't see it.

  • It should be in the Filtering group as I recall.

  • Where do I find the Filtering group?  I added the image of my screen.

You're looking at the "presets" sub-tab, check in "editor" or "advanced" sub-tabs.

    What "editor or advanced sub-tabs"?

I finally found the sub-tabs and Bloom.  When I Enable the Bloom filter the image gets fuzzy.  Now what do I do?  Tried changing settings but I really do not see it glow.

  • Okay, I played around with it some more.  If I increased the brightness Bloom Filter Brightness Scale the asteroid gets brighter on one side.  Is this what the way to make it glow?  Is there a way to make it glow outward, radiating a different color?
BTW, I think I found out why the image got fuzzy earler.  I forgot to click the Surface Selection Tool.

Here is what I would try for that object.

    1. Duplicate the asteroid object (Edit -> Duplicate Node)
    2. Name the duplicated one "Glow" for easier reference.
    3. Parent Glow to the asteroid so that when you move the rock, Glow will move as well.
    4. Scale the Glow up say to 120%
    5. On the surface settings for Glow
      1. Configure the Base and Glossy colors as you would like to see it glowing
      2. Put the same color in the Emission channel
      3. Change the opacity cutout to something low (2% or so, but experiment with it)
      4. To make the glow seem less uniform, you could also increase the Bump, Normal or Displacement strength values if there are any maps assigned to them.

Now the bloom filter will be more interested in adding the bloom for your Glow object than the main one.

JonnyRay, I got as far as step 4.  But when I clicked on the Glow's surface tab i don't see options for Base and Glossy.  Am I at the right place?

--Just added another pic after playing around with the controls.  Having trouble figuring out how to get the Glow to diffuse outward.

That's a 3Delight shader. You'll need to apply the Daz Uber Iray shader first then you'll see those surface settings.

What do you mean by maps for displacement, bumps, and Normal?  Do I need to breakout my Mapsco?  (Just kidding.)

---Okay, whenever I turn on Bloom my image blurs.  Looks like I can't use it for this option. Oh well.

You can use a Geometry Shell rather than duplicating - uses slightly less memory.
