exporting chars for other animation

Hi there,

I am in a strange situation. I am a director creating a new film with a DAZ 3D animator. The animator has created custom characters using DAZ assets (most of which are free from what I can tell). Can the animator export and provide me the file(s) necessary to have other animators use the same characters in other animations? They seem to think it is impossible or not allowed. Anyone have any information around this? How can I go about this in a fair and correct way? Is there a precedent? Any help is greatly appreciated!

As long as you have your own licenses for the content used and have it installed, they can provide you with the DS scene files or presets, which you could then export if necessary to the final format required. Providing you with the mesh in another format, such as FBX would not be permissible under the license however.

thanks! to clarify, this is for another animator to be using in DAZ as well. what is the best work flow to getting DAZ characters to another animator to create footage for the same project, with recreations of the same character. any help super appreciated!!

Assuming they are using stock assets, or custome morphs that they have created and not yet saved as assets, then the scene file will havea ll that is needed as long as the other users have the same content installed (if not DS will offer to install it through Connect).

Yes, even though you both will be using the same program (Daz Studio) you cannot share content with each other, only the saved scene file in which both of you need to have the same exact content purchased and installed to get the same results.

Great. Thanks for all this info!! It is much appreciated.

So, to confirm: if Animator 1 shares the scene file that includes 2 custom DAZ-created characters with Animator 2 (who has installed all files that comrpise Animator 1's characters) then Animator 2 can work with Animator 1's custom characters from the scene file, and create new work with Animator 1's custom characters (ie placing those characters in new scenes/location doing new actions) in DAZ.

Yes. Animator 1, if they are creating literal custom morphs (made with a dForm in DS or by manipulating the emsh in a modelling/sculpting application) may want to save those morphs as assets (AutoFollow doesn't always work with embedded morphs at this time) but as long as those are custom then it's OK to share the morph assets (e.g. for Genesis 8 female they would be in /Data/Daz 3D/Genesis 8/Female/Morphs/Animator1'sName/ and would go to the same location on Animator2's system).
