Figure rotation help needed

2 questions: 1) why once you rotate certain figures in one axis do the other axis NOT rotate them in the same plane as BEFORE you rotated?  2) I want to Ultrascatter a M3 figure lying face down (currently 90 deg in X) and keep him face down but rotate him up to 180 always face down.  I can create a group which, when I rotate the group in Y, it rotates as I want.  I can't translate that to Ultrascatter though.

Okay I figured out how to correct my problem.  I just needed to zero all 3 rotation axis, then rotate 90 on X and that worked.  I still don't know why rotation order matters on some figures and props.

"Gimbal lock". If you rotate an axis early in the rotation order it carries the later axes with it, so you can end up with two overlapping. In DS you can use the Tool Settings pane to select a different axis system which avoids the issue (but means that the viewport gizmo will affect more than one rotation).

  • Here's a couple of images to explain gimble lock visually.
