Convert custom figures (rigged or non-rigged) into genesis8?

Hi, I am using more and more DAZ studio, and now I am at the point where most of my meshes (rigged or non-rigged), need to be imported in DAZ. I want to create a library in DAZ, of converted meshes, so I can use the same clothes, hair, poses and animations. Currently all my meshes are coming from different sources and some are rigged by me, some are auto-rigged via mixamo, and other are already rigged (like the MMD or XNAlara for example.

Is there a tutorial that show how do you import figures and basically make them G8? I saw tutorials starting from the bare OBJ and rig it into DS; although I hope there is something faster, because it would take me 2 lives to rig all the models I want to use.

The final objective is to have the easiest project possible, to import figures, make them like if they were official G8 figures, so I can leverage on all my collection of assets in DS. Is this not realistic at all?

If you mean take a completely different figure and turn it into a G8 character then no, there's no tutorials to do that as it's just not possible.

It's very unrealistic in my experience. Not saying it can't be done, but it is a ton of work and not an easy task. I have some game meshes I have transferred the rig of gensis to. It can get close so I can pose them, but never enough for a quality character to build upon.

The primary task is getting the new characters rigged and depanding on how close they are shaped to the genesis figure you use to transfer the rig (if you do not do it from scratch) will determine how much rig editing you will have to do after (the hard part!).

As for getting genesis clothing and such to work with the new figures, that will require you redoing the rigging and possibly the mesh on the clothing to get that to work, again, not a very easy task. You could try turning the new clothing into dynamic or dforce so it would fit, but that is still a longshot.

Also, not sure of your uses after you got this done, but once you get any of this done, you cannot upload it or share it anywhere, This will only be for personal use since no parts of anything developed at DAZ can be redistributed, against the EULA.

If you have a collection of FBX rigged figures you want to render in Daz Stdio, your best bet and easiest method is to pose them first, then import them into Daz Studio as a .OBJ and then render them.

  • I see; so the whole thing is not possible. I am not sure at this point how does people make figures for Genesis8 for example; that are able to load and use (and sell of course).

From what I read, you can't do anything even if you transfer the rig on the different mesh. I recall that the EULA does not allow for derivative work to be sold; but I don't recall anywhere that you can't transfer the bone structure setup; since this is what every single figure does, to be able to work in DS when you load a piece of clothing/prop or you pose/animate them. If the rig is not 1:1, you cannot re-use anything. Same goes if you create cloting or props; since to have the item to conform to the figure, it must have the same bone structure copied on it.

This is disappointing; I was hoping I could import new figures, instead of use only the ones that DAZ sell; with the ton of content I already have, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If I have to spend time just to get a render, I find faster to use Blender or Cinema4d and do everything there, since my meshes are already rigged, and it is easier to just pose the clothing or props.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry for the info. If you transfer the rigging from a DAZ character, that is still considered a derivative work since the rigging/bones came from a character.

As for clolthing, I am not sure, but I believe the rigging can br transfferred and then the product sold, but I haven't done that, so unsure.

That is the great thing about Blender, C4D and other modeling apps, they all recognize the FBX bone structure, Daz Studio does not.

Using the transfer utility to transfer the figure rig to make conforming clothes then distributing the clothes is allowed. But you can't transfer the rigging to a different human mesh to create another human figure and distribute that.

To create a Genesis 8 character you start from G8 mesh and morph it (ie move the vertices, you can't add or remove any) using a modelling program, then use the Morph Loader tool to load the modified mesh as a morph. You don't use a totally different mesh.

  • Thanks to both; now I understand that what I want to do can't be really done.
