Mesh smoother slowing me down too much.

I had to fit some clothing using the mesh smoother. But now every time I move something in my scene I have to wait 5 minutes for the mesh smoother to re-apply. This is nuts!

Can I turn mesh smoother off while I compose my scene?

I see a thing called "Interactive Update" next to the mesh smoother controlls. I turn it off and on and it seems to make no difference.

No. Wait. I clicked the Interactive Update thing and it took another five minutes to obey, but this did seem to work. Problem solved.
