Templates now on Product Library Page?

I am writing in the hope that SOMEONE from Daz will see this and change it. I am hoping it was just a mistake, rather than the new way things are done, and I would REALLY appreciate knowing.

The latest PC weekly freebie, Halloween Fun (cute - thanks Ann!) does NOT have the templates on the product page as they have always been done since I can remember. Instead, they are on the Product LIBRARY page.

This is a TERRIBLE place for them if you use Install Manager to download your products (which I am figuring Daz WANTS people to do)

You have to somehow intuit that there IS a template, then you have to go to your account, go to the product library, click on the product, and get it. If it's on the product page, you can download it as soon as you put it in your cart :(

PLEASE, if you are going to put it there, ALSO put it back on the product page or have it as part of the Install Manager download.

No this is not a mistake.
It was actually a bad idea to make files available directly from the product page for a number of reasons the most important one being that when a product is retired and the product page is no longer showing in the store, those files would not be available.

This way, the files are always available in your product library regardless of whether you use DIM or not and regardless of whether the page is actually available in the store.

One thing that we CAN address going forward is that you shouldn't have to "intuit" that there are resource or template files in the product. Those should be called out in the "What's included &Features;" tab.

Really hope you DO add a note that Templates are avaiable on the product page - I always download them when I put something into the cart (just in case I want to try a retexture) and while it's OK to remember to check the Product Library the first few times for new products, pretty soon I'd forget to do it and then it would become really effortsome to go through loads of products to find out if I missed any.

It might also be helpful to have them linked on the readme page, since DIM users don't need to go to their Product Library pages, but DIM links you right to the readme page.

That would help, but what about putting them in DIM as well. Then people who use it would get the download of the Templates as well. Another option - put the templates inside the product files.

I never ever look at the readme page, personally. I only use DIM to download my products. I hate having the readmes removed from the product downloads, too. I don't get why everything can't be in one place. Gotta download from DIM, link to the product page to get the template, link to the readme to get that. Yikes...

It is all in one place. In the Wiki. If you use DIM you don';t need the wiki. There is a folder with all the readme's in it

Actually that would be neat - you could add a filter so people who never want to dl templates can just switch them off (like you can Poser files, or Bryce files or whatever)

There is ? Where? Is this only if you INSTALL everything with DIM? (which I don't do because like many many people who've had content for ages and customize their runtimes, I don't want DIM to decide where to install things)

you can find your readme's in DIM here C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\ReadMe's

Nope. All that's in My Daz 3D Library is InstallManagerFileRegister.ini

So, I am probably correct, you ONLY get the readme files installed if you use DIM to INSTALL content, not if you download using DIM and install yourself. :(

In that case you would have to use the wiki. http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/start. Just look up the product id

I'm curious about this as well. If you use DIM and let it install there is a ReadMe's directory in your library but that doesn't have all of the readme's, just the ones from products that had a readme in the first place. If you click the link inside DIM under installed products it takes you to the wiki readme page.

I'd also like to have the textures as part of the product download.

As I manually download anyway, I like them fine in the product library. As they are in a separate zip [which is good] one can still download just the templates when required.

The downside to not having them on the product page, is some people [like me upon occasion], like to check the templates to see if the product is actually selling what is wanted before making the purchase. Some promo pics are not very accurate or indeed even exist aside from the 'one' displayed.

If you click on the information (letter i in a circle) next to an item it will take you to the online readme. That works even if you don't insall with DIM.

Hmm I don't have a folder called my daz3d library. Is there supposed to be one?

I think you actually find them in "DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/Readme's", if you use the default install path.

Not all of the readme's are there. For example, I have A Curious Hallway but there is no readme file for it.

I can get to the readme on the wiki from DIM but it would be really nice if all of the product readme's were available on my system. If they were part of the DIM .zip file then even those that don't use the DIM could get them as well.

And if you don't install using DIM how does it know what products you have installed? I'm just curious since I do use it to download and install.

I think you actually find them in “DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/Readme’s”, if you use the default install path.

The default DIM path is the "C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library" path above. If you changed that then they should be in the readme directory under whatever path you tell DIM to install to. However, as I noted not every product gets a readme file installed.

It doesn't. But it knows what you've downloaded as long as you have a zip file and dsx file with the correct name in your download folder. It can be a blank zip file, just needs to be a zip file with the correct name.

I don't see anything in the files I've downloaded where there are readmes. All that downloads is a zip file (which no longer contains the readmes) and a .dsx file.

Out of curiosity Alisa, I just opened some random zips I've downloaded through DIM (I also don't install with it as a general rule), and from what I see, PA items DO have the ReadMe folder, but DO/PC items don't.

Whether that will change for PA items in the future, I have no idea, but that's what I'm seeing right now.

Thanks :) What I was referring to was actually the link that was mentioned to the readmes. I don't know if I've gotten a lot of ...well, anything, but definitely not many new PA only items lately and didn't notice if the new items had readmes - seemed to me that they stopped putting them in at some point when they started using the wiki....

I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct. It seemed to me when they first started using the Wiki, most PAs didn't go there to fill out info about their products. I guess DAZ decided to at least do it for all their products, and now that DIM has the "info" link for each product so you can see it on the Wiki, they probably didn't think it necessary to duplicate the effort by including ReadMes in the zips.
