My geometry get incorrectly smoothed

So, I'm trying to do something like a counter top with rounded edges, but the smoothing is incorrectly applyed and it breaks the lightning. It happens when I put geometry on the side. I can't turn off smoothing because I want the smoothed edges. I don't have this problem in any other 3d applications. Why does that happen, how can I fix it?

  • I'm sure it seems obvious to you, but what specifically do you feel is incorrect about the smoothing/lighting in the second image?  I can see it's different to the first image, so do you just want them to look the same?  The different geometry may have an effect.

Are the images from the viewport in Daz Studio?  What does it look like when rendered?  What did you use for the modeling and how did you import the model into DS?

The only control over smoothing that you have in DS as far as I am aware is in the Surfaces tab, where you can change the smoothing angle, but I have yet to find a situation in which that is useful.

I don't see a similar problem in the DS viewport in a simple test.

That looks to me like a mesh glitch. I do get an odd bright line at the far end, which isn't on the no-end version, but I think that's down to a mixtue of drawing the wires and the faint bounding box - it doesn't show if I switch to Smooth Shaded. The very strong artefact along the top of the bevel is not showing in my mesh.

  • I started over and my mesh is fine now. Must have been a problem with it.
