Luck with FaceShop 8?
![murph101](https://farnsworth-prod.uc.r.appspot.com/forums/uploads/userpics/092/nGW8QYKWM07XT.png)
I purchased FaceShop 8 and find it very challenging. Things that are skimmed over in the demo video become real big problems making it pretty much useless unless I can find anyone who has experience.
When I follow the instructions using my own set of pictures (straight on shot of the subject), it creates a map, but then stretches it over a pre-defined head shape. Interestingly, my subject is a picture of my 19 year old son, and when stretched over the Michael 5 figure in DAZ, it winds up looking like his 26 year old brother. Is there a way to get FaceShop to use the left and right shots of the subject to follow the shapes of the subject rather than using the facial shape of Michael 5?
If the alignment dots are not perfect in the FaceShop set-up step, everything gets mis-aligned on the model, despite my best efforts. There seems to be little control for accuracy, and once the face has been generated, you have to start over completely to try again (often with similar mis-alignment). Any ideas?
Once the face has been stretched over the Michael 5 head, only the five or six inches across the center of the face appear. The rest of the head is a crazy distortion from the face map. Not only does it look really bad (and un-usable), but everything is terribly dark, whereas the Mitchael 5 body is normal. I've tried lightening up the map in Photoshop, but it still looks awful. I can't figure out how to fill in the rest of the head with any kind of texture map that I might create. Any ideas?
As a comparison, I've also used a competing product called FaceGen, which works way better (see my avatar), and I can fill in the blank skin textures to make it more complete in the map. The downside of FaceGen is I can only create a static .OBJ file, which I import into Carrara and affix it to a body costume. The expression is whatever I generated in FaceGen (neutral, angry, smiling, etc.), and I cannot change it once it's in Carrara. Forget any more posing or animation, which is what I was trying to achieve with FaceShop and DAZ 4.6.
Has anyone had luck with either product in creating a custom face with animation or morphing ability?
P.S. I've also used iClone 5, which did a pretty good job of adopting the subject face, and it does great animation, but I can't figure out how to get the figure exported out into Carrara where I build my scenes. There is an export component I can purchase, but it will only export static .OBJ files (maybe it's changed since I've tried a year ago).
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Comments
I've attached a pic where the head was generated in FaceGen. I think it does a great job of capturing the facial contours of the actual subject.
Here's the actual subject from which FaceGen created a .OBJ file and texture map I imported into Carrara.
Not so but a plugin is required. Sold by the same company. Morphs to Genesis.
There's a free demo. It's called FaceGen Exporter.
Not Bueller, but have you thought of calling/emailing tech support at Faceshop? (info@abalonerllc.com). 650-302-0894.
Just a crazy thought....
I've also tried this product and was not happy, its very useless. The vendor has not even had the nerve to come up with a tutorial.
I would not recommend anyone to buy it.
I use both facegen exporter fo Genesis (my avatar)
and iclone
iClone figures export beautifully as fbx to carrara 8.5 NOT C8.1 WITH FACIAL ANIMATION via iClone 5 3dxchange pipeline
re-exported from iClone Daz figures do not have facial animation unfortunately so are best used straight from your runtime but it is the only way I can get DECIMATED Daz figures into Carrara so good for crowds.
You must have overlooked the following:
1. FaceShop is a mature product, out since 2007. It is in its 8th!!! edition
2. There is a 48-page Manual (*including Quickstart tutorial) directly at the installation page
3. The same tutorial is accessible from EVERY screen in the application
4. There are MANY "how-to videos on FaceShop, also linked directly inside FaceShop and the install
5. There are many FaceShop tuts on YouTube
6. Based on this I am not sure that people will take your recommendation seriously.
Laslo
your avatar is exquisite
Murph, I tried you in iClone too
(you DID post your picture on a public forum LOL!)
exported FBX and imported into Carrara
ic5 vid in BG Carrara8.5 foreground, Dynamic hair
I'm not sure if it's worth getting the latest version. Version 6 was useless, it kept crashing for me.
Actually having a problem with installing Faceshop 8. I follow the instructions and select the Daz4 folder
I get a nessage prod installed after 2 secs. The file is actually 60 megs, which means it never installed.
I checked all my Daz version and its not on installed plugins tab
Plan to ask for a refund as this sftware seems useless
Since you don't have the courtesy to post a follow-up e-mail to this post, I'll do it for you.
After you emailed info at abalonellc, we were able to figure out what went wrong (you had multiple Studios on your machine and choose a wrong path. The fast install time means nothing: the installer simply copies the files in the right location, which is very fast).
Last email informed me that we solved your problem amd FaceShop works fine.
FYI: there is a how-to video for those who have a similar problem and don't like to read the maual:

Laslo did provide..half a solution. Although I can now load faceshop via Daz it wont work on
the characters I have. It is asking for a Michael 5. I have Genesis characters and was under impression
the software would work with a Genesis character since thats what it stated on the sftware notes.
At this point Im waiting for tech support from DAZ to help because Lazlo cannot help further.
Michael 5 IS a Genesis character! (BTW: FaceShop IS NOT asking you for any character, it only shows a number of characters available in the EZ mode. However, it works with ANY character you put on stage. It honestly does - just try it).
With this said, please put Michael 5 or any other Genesis-based figure (or not Genesis-based figure) you have on stage and launch FaceShop! Just do it!
Here, i did help you (but forgive me if I cannot provide you with basic DAZ skills).
Laslo
I showed you a screen shot where is asked for a Michael 5 character. Your reply was
" I don't
> know what you want to do. If you have M4 you can use that.
> Genesis is also a male/female figure, you can just
> adjust. My role ends here, you need to learn
> Studio now:-)Laslo"
I found your tone a bit condescending, especially for a customer of your product.
I appreciate your help but again it doesnt solve my problem as I cannot use the current figure
I have.
As the creator/owner of the sftware you should ensure that your customer are 100% satisfied with the product,
otherwise they wont come or recommended it.
The issue ends here as I will not reply further to your comments and will seek help from DAZ.
This is an update to my earlier problem with Faceshop. I spoke with Lazlo@abalonellc today and he walked me thru the entire process.
He was very helpful.
Although I now have a working version of Faceshop I will probably need to get Michael 4 to avoid modifying
the facial points manually.
It works best with either Michael 4 or 5.
Lazlo did provide a workaround by selecting 'Basic Child' as the avatar but I will probably need to read the manual
and see how to fine tune the settings.
Again a BIG thank Lazlo!
Hi there Daz fans. This is my first post and I am sorry it has to be a complaint. I just purchased and installed both the faceshop 8 for mac plugin AND the actual application. Naturally though Faceshop does not appear in the "edit" window as it is supposed too and I can't get anything to import from the actual application (not the plugin) into Daz either. So i called Laslo at abalonellc.com and he sent me a link to the supposed 4.6 plugin that would solve the problem but of course no dice. It now appears in the "about plugins" pane but not in the "edit" drop down. Instead there's a happy RED lock on it saying loaded improperly. So I emailed him back and told him what was up and he actually told me to just install the 32bit version of Daz and see if that works because he doesn't "THINK" faceshop supports the mac version of Daz 4.6 64bit??? Is this some kind of joke? The product page says it right there "FACESHOP 8 for MAC compatible with Daz 4.6 specifically on MAC $89.00 !!!!. Needless to say I'm jealous that you folks here even get to use it at all mac or not.
Once again, no follow up from this customer. We did resolve his issue (wrong installation) and yes, Faceshop 8 Mac works in 64-bit. Please, next time when you have been helped, please post that too, not just the complaints!
Hey Daz Community
I have a complaint too ha!
I bought Faceshop for Photoshop Mac 2 days ago
by my credit card $42 from here:http://www.daz3d.com/faceshop-for-photoshop
and the manual download link they sent me at daz doesn't work
and i get no response from zendesk support people
When I buy something online I expecting immediate delivery! No?
