Blank file after rendering

Hi Team, me again. Today's question is about rendering...and possibly lights...

I've created a scene and rendered it fine, albeit a bit dark. Then I altered a couple of things and rendered again. Not bad but still a bit dark. So, looked at various tutorials and reset my render values to those recommended. Renders improved.

Now, I decided to change the view angle on my scene and rotated nearly 180. Rendered it but most of the foreground, including my figure Genesis 8, were practically black. Aha, I thought, must be something to do with lighting. So, again looked at various tutorials on lighting but got totally confused with all of the different methods. Had a Paracetamol sandwich.

Decided to try it myself, play around a bit. Located the AreaLight - Headlamp Blocker in the scene and moved it around from the rear of the scene/room (I'm using Luxury Bedroom Scene) to the front and pointed it at Genesis figure (I think). Slid the luminance up a bit and tried a few sliding controls that seemed to have no effect whatsoever.

Now at this point I have to say that in my defense all looked good in the Viewpoint Preview pane.

However, when I rendered (Took about 40mins) I get just a blank file...well, a very very light pale bluish colour, almost white. I tried again but still the same result. Googled the crap out of it but couldn't find anyone with the same question. I am unique... also a bit slow... :(

Please help

had the camera ended up below ground level? If Draw Ground is on (assuming this is Iray) that can mask th scene. The Headlamp Blocker as such is not doing anything, other than fooling the ehadlamp into not shining if there are no real lights in the scene (and that can now be done in Render Settings) and it is usually supplied with 3Delight lights so I am wondering what you are using.

  • Hi Richard, I have no idea what I'm using, sorry. I just found the AreaLight in the tree of contents after loading the scene.

However, I think you may be right, I'm suspecting that I moved the light to somewhere silly and blocks out the rest of the scene.

Bear with me, I'm going in....

  • Richard, that was indeed the problem, I moved the light, redirected and voila! All good, many thanks

You can see which render engine you are using at the top of the Editor or Advanced tabs in the Render Settings pane.

  • Yes, I'm using NVIDIA Iray, any issues there?

Well, the draw ground issue could be a factor, and uberArea won't - I think - be converted to a light

  • Thanks again Richard, if I knew what that meant it may help, sorry :)

For your empty render, go to the Editor tab of the render Setings pane and turn off Draw Ground then try again (it's in the list of properties that display if you click Environment on the left).

UberArea will not, I think, give the intended result if used in an Iray render - for Iray surfaces to emit light you want to use the Emissive Sahder preset (select the surfae you want to chnage, e.g. by clicking on it with the Surfae Selection tool, then in the Presets tab of the Sufaces pane go to Shaders>Iray and find the Emissive preset, double-click to apply. and in the Editor tab scroll down to the Emissive colour property and the luminance settings just below and adjust.

  • OK Richard, here we go.

Been messing around with things today and first tried your recommendations. Got through it but highlighting an item just made it white? And changing luminance didn't do anything. Second and third image.

Then I decided to try different sorts of lighting until I ended up with loads of lights on! Spotlight, Distant light, UberEnvironment2 (whatever that is) and area light. No matter what I try my renders all turn out too dark. Assorted images to illustrate.

I may have to start a fresh thread for this as, in my humble opinion as a novice, it has to with rendering settings...? Although I've I've tried all sorts of recommended settings. Any ideas...?

    Thanks for your indulgence

The Point, Spot, and Distant lights in the Create menu are the oens that work in Iray (Linear Point is the same as Point for iray). The others are for 3Delight.

You wouldn't usually apply an emissive shader to something like a duvet - they don't usually emit light - and it does have a fairly high value. Getting a well lit scene, particularly for interiors, is a mix of adding the right lights (actual lights and possible soem gost lights - planes with the emissive preset and the Cutout Opacity set to a low but non-zero value - to fill in the shadows) and adjusting the Tone Mapping in Render Settings (the defaults are for a bright day outdoors).

  • Thanks Richard, advice all noted. Back to the drawing board :)

    I may be some time....
