G8 to G3 clothing clones?
Hello,
I'm aware of this product to make G8 clothing backwards compatible to G3 https://www.daz3d.com/sy-genesis-8-clones-for-genesis-3 but was hoping for a little info befo I purchase. How do you use it? The product page didn't really say. Do you have to select the clothing and apply some setting to it for the morphs to apply? I just hate buying stuff and having to faff aronud with it for a day until I figure out what to do. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks!

It add clones and templates for auto-fit so it is automatic (mostly).
Oustanding. Thanks Jestmart!
@DDCreate, If you haven't already purchased the clone product, take a quick look at the clothing converters from Sickleyield and RiverSoft Art. These scripts will convert the individual clothing items from any G8 clothing product to work on G3, and then create a new set of presets in their own folder. Auto-fit will lose some, if not all, of the morphs an item comes with, but converting the clothing leaves the morphs intact.
If you want/need a fast, easy, automated solution, these converters will make your work a lot easier. Here are the links for the G8F to G3F and G8M to G3M. They are discounted for March Madness, and buying both together will only cost $24.95. (Less if you qualify for the "Key item" discount.)
(If you have already purchased the clones, but want the converters instead, there is a 30-day return policy.)
Stick with the clones DDCreate, LOL
@FSMCDesigns, Have you actually tried the G3<->G8 converters? I don't have them, but I've been converting between the two generations since Sy posted her tutorial on DA. And converting that way, the only issue I ever have is around the collar/shoulder joints.
Of course, heeled shoes are an issue no matter how you convert.
And neither auto-fit, nor automated converters can do a good enough job to satisfy this perfectionist between G8/G3 and earlier generations.
ETA: Viva la dForce!
yes, the G3 to G8, the G2 to G8 and the V4 to G8 and returned them manily on the quality of the conversion. I posted examples and comparisons in the release threads and asked users why they were happy with the obvious quality issues and it all came down to convienance. If you are converting hard to convert items like detailed dresses, skirt or tunics, you will get a better conversion than with autofit, but normal clothing converts very poorly compared to a clone.
In all fairness if you have lots of older hair, the converters work fairly well on those and I didn't return those ones.
Here is a simple 3DAge V4 dress using the converter and a clone
DDcreate doesn't even have to use a converter or a clone, simply change the scene identifier from genesis 8 female to genesis 3 female and the G8 clothing will fit G3 fine in most cases.
@FSMCDesigns, I wouldn't expect the V4 conversions to work particularly well, at least to my standards. But I did expect the G3<->G8 to work very well, as the two generations are so similar, and as you pointed out, changing the Scene ID goes a long way in the conversion process.
I do think that learning how to do these things ourselves will always lead to a better final result, but there is so much to learn, we have to pick our battles. The less important the final result, the more attractive the automated approach becomes.
Each of us has to decide what is worth the extra effort and what is better served, for our needs, with an automated approach. I suspect newbies will be happy with the automation, at least until they get better at the skills needed to do things themselves. And that can be worth cost of the package(s), even in the long run.
I am just the opposite, I will never suggest to new users utlities that do things for them that they can do it themslves in DS. there are far to many users that seem to be reliant on utilities that PAs provide when they can do it themselves. Chances are they have no idea that they can do it themslves becaue of all the converters and plugins pushed on them and that they never learned how to use the tools inside DS in the first place...
Wow! Spirited Debate! Let me explain what I'm hoping for and maybe it will help get a consensus on which product would be best...

A lot of my stories are Martial Arts themed. There was a Martial Art uniform released back during Genesis 2 for men and women. I bought them and have used them on G3 models without problem, often successfully with dForce. But of course, I was chomping at the big for a new more advanced uniform. They recently released 2 different styles which I'd love to purchase but the majority of my characters are G3 because I have more morphs and materials for them. I had my fingers crossed that IF a new Gi was made, it would be for Gen3/Gen8. No biggie, times change. So given these clothing types and the fact that they will frequently be in Action/Combat poses... what do you think? Sickleyields clones or the packages that L'Adair mentioned?
I'm not a newbie but my approach to learning Daz wasn't structured. I just started doing stuff and when I hit a problem I couldn't figure out, I asked the boards or found a tutorial.
I'm not sure how to do this but I'm sure it isn't over my head with a point in the right direction.
Thank both of you for your help and advice on this. It's truly appreciated!
If you only need to do one or two outfits, skip the products, and do it yourself using Sickleyield's tutorial: Convert Clothing G3 to G8, G8 to G3, You can create a set of presets of these products for G3, and they become just like any other G3 outfit. The shoulder JCMs are a bit off, but you plan on using dForce, so that won't be an issue. (And part of the tutorial is how to change the Scene Identification, which is super simple.)
One thing I do when converting clothing is apply the default pose to the whole outfit. In the case of converting G8 to G3, that would mean apply a T-Pose. Then Bake Rotations. That's a bit different from Sy's tutorial, but I like the results better.
Have fun. And feel free to share some of your renders here. I'd love to see what you're doing!
You don't need a clone.
There's a better way to do it.
1 - Load G3 Male or Female (depending on the clothes)
2) Load the clothing item you want without fitting it
3) adjust the limbs on the clothes by +/-45 and +/- 6 until its lined up right. You can adjust from there for but it works out of the box 90% of the time as is.
4) Use the Joint Editor Tool (Alt-Shift-J, looks like a bone crossed with a pencle) and select the clothes then choose BAKE JOINTS.
5) Go to scene and click the Gen 3 Figure. Then Shift click your clothing. IT MUST BE DONE IN THIS ORDER
6) Go to Edit - Figure - Rigging - Transfer Rigging (Figure Space)
7) Go to Edit - Scene identification and then change the Perferred Base to the figure of chose.
Save your work as a new asset and enjoy your converted clothing. You might need some smoothing but it should do a pretty solid job.
Also works from G3 to g8.

Well, that's pretty much SY's tutorial in a nutshell. lol. Sickleyield provides a file with the pose you can just apply to the clothing. As well as instructions for converting hair and high-heeled shoes. That's why I always share the link. And it introduces people to her DeviantArt page, which includes numerous tutorials for using Daz Studio.
Huh. Forgot where I learned it, actually. Been doing it for a while.
And... I did not know about the files!
I bookmarked it for reference, and kept going back to it frequently when I first started converting clothing. I've been doing it long enough, I can do it without needing the reference anymore, but in the early days, (months, really,) I'd forget one step or another. Very frustrating. Converting simulations to morphs was another that frustrated me, until Richard posted a detailed step-by-step for me. (I turned that into a mini-tutorial here, if you're interested.)
I want to thank EVERYONE who put in on this thread with suggestions. I went with SY's Deviant Art Tutorial and was successful getting clothing for a G8M to fit on a G3F which is pretty cool if you ask me! So thanks again, this was a great lesson and will come in handy to know!
Okay so I'm sorry to have to revive this thread but I'm running into another snag. I used the process above before and it worked beautifully. But now, I get to step 3 and the clothing item apparently has no parameters with which to adjust the limbs. Is that "game over" for converting this clothing to work on G3F? :( I hope not. Any thoughts or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
