Getting Started. Single Question
Hi all, hope this is in the right place.
Here's the thing, I have everything downloaded and I think, with the help of tutorials be able to figure out what I'm doing on a technical level. I have the $ to buy what I need and the time, but I am 50+ yrs old. - As this program goes, can I still learn it without having a great deal of graphics experience? I want to do comic books but wanted to ask before I make myself happily nuts for the next year learning.
When ya get older, learning is tougher.
Thanks
Brandt

Going to move your thread to the New Users Forum. There is the best place to learn
Well what can I say...50+ here as well...turn around and walk while you can, once inside there's no way out
50+ years, eh? Youngster.
I was 60 when I finally had a computer powerful enough to run Daz Studio.
But Sven is right… there is no way out of this rabbit hole, once you fall in.
And you will probably make yourself nuts while learning, but know learning never stops as Daz is constantly improving and adding new features to Daz Studio. Just have fun, and make art that makes you smile.
As you want to do comic books, I recommend you stick with and learn using the 3Delight render engine. PwToon works really well in 3Delight. And with a decent computer, those images will render pretty fast. Iray came out about 6-7 months after I got started with Daz Studio. I was barely to the point where I could light a scene in 3Delight, but I jumped into Iray with both feet. Now I'm still very much the newbie when it comes to using 3Delight, and I really regret not learning it better before I switched.
Here's a thread over in the Art Studio forums dedicated to 3Delight renders. There is some truly amazing, jaw-dropping work showcased there: Show us your 3Delight renders
50+ here also and I am constantly learning new things, especially with DS and 3D. If you get stuck on anything ask away, we are all here to help!
Yes, you can learn it. Just give yourself the time to learn, and don't hesitate to ask.
I can recommend the new users contest section that has challanges which will bring you experience with various topics, and also direct feedback on your renders. You can also participate in the WIP (work in progress) threads only if you are not comfortable with joining the contests.
It can be very disheartening in the beginning when you created something you are really proud of, because you thought you finally got the hang of it, and then not get the awe and ohs, but suggestions about how to make the render better... But if you take it as part of the process then you can actually draw inspiration from the feedback you get. Anyway, I'm going astray from your question.
We have a dedicated thread for comics, btw. - https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/228061/3d-comic-book-tips-and-pictures#latest
In any case, i.e. in the beginning, there might be a lot of frustration when things don't work out as you think they should. Your system speficics might also play into things, and you have to decide if you want to spend time learning 3Delight or Iray render engine.
Hi :D
In my signature you'll find my YouTube channel, that is meant for beginners! The first lesson is "how to install Daz Studio" ^^
I make comics too, recently I've posted a video about my complete workflow! ^^
Welcome to your new additio.... um I mean hobby! You can definitely still learn at 50+, and have plenty of time to enjoy it. I'm another one In the 60+ crowd, and I learn new software all the time for 3D, GIS, photogrammetry, and video editing (it's kinda my job, as well as my hobby). Just take your time, and don't try to learn too much at once. If you've never worked with computer based 3D before, it can be a bit of a steep learning curve when starting out, but it will get easier (more understandable??) with time.
There are a lot of good and very helpful people on the forums here, so you've come to the right place for getting started.
I'm probably one of the oldest codgers on the forums, and never, ever let anyone tell you that you are too old for anything! There may be times when we might be, but we can pretty much figure that out on our own. As for learning new stuff, go for it! I'm a firm believer in the concept that your mind is like a muscle - it needs regular exercise or it will get flabby. You will get discouraged from time to time, but there is help for that here. You will get frustrated from time to time, but there is help for that here as well. And when you do achieve something that you are proud of, no matter how modest, there is a place to come and celebrate. Welcome aboard (we can't let the kids have all the fun)!
Now about cartoons. Aren't you a little old for that?
Thank you to all who have answered. I did my first tutorial and started experimenting last night. Will take awhile but I have high hopes. Again thanks.
(And to Chohole, who moved my thread. - Thanks and sorry. I am still learning the ropes of what goes where. Apologies.)
Not going to argue on that, as I don't know the specifics, but I do sure as hell know I am the oldest moderator around the forums. Old enough to be Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. I was actually born during the war, although right at the end, and now you have to work out which war.
As the others are saying you are never to old to learn new stuff. Never believe anyone who says you are.
Wow, that's beautiful to hear! :D
That's how I'd like to reason when I'll be over 60! ^^
In Italy we had Michelangelo, a great artist in many fields, who said "I am still learning"...when he was 87. And it was 1562, when the life expectancy was around 40 years!!!
PS: I remember you for your freebies website list if I'm not wrong, that was one of the first things I've ever read about Daz, thank you! :)
I used to think computer graphics and 3D was the playground of twenty- and thirty-somethings. Then I started using Daz Studio and hanging out in the forums. I was amazed to find, as an "oldster," I was only one of many. One of many times many, in fact. I wouldn't be surprised to find the oldsters outnumber the younguns by a country mile.
That's funny. When I talk to co workers about the game mods and addons I develop and show them what they look like, they are surprised and ask me why am am not doing that full time. I then inform them there are numerous kids in high school that are going above and beyond and creating whole games. I remember when I was doing SIMS2 development. I was at a friends house showing him my work and his little brother came in and showed me the game he had created.....from scratch.......15 levels.......his 3rd one.......he was 16, LOL
My eldest was writing games using a zx80 and a BBC (at school) and jumping from one to the other, That was at 14+. His teacher at school told me that Steve and his buddy were teaching the teacher literally, he was having trouble keeping up with them. Stupid thing was when he was 15 and wanted my to guarantee him so he could update his computer I would only do it if he got a weekend job rather than just a once a week paper round. I found him the job, because I had a friend wanted a kitchen porter for weekends. Stupid thing was that Steve caught the cooking bug (his younger brother was already doing Home economics at school and helping in an Italian restaurant on Saturdays) and he ended up becoming a chef (award winning) and the younger one, who had started offf wanting to be a chef decided cooking was fine as a hobby, but not as a career, and he was the one who eventually went into IT as a career. He has never written any games, but does teach the kids in a coding dojo after work.
Nice story Chohole, you just never know where life will lead you, LOL. My friends little brother works in the medical field now, go figure.
